Sliedrecht is a town and a municipality in the western part of the Netherlands. It is located in the province of South Holland. The municipality covers an area of about 14.01 km2 (5.41 sq mi). A part of this area, 1.18 km2 (0.46 sq mi), is covered by water.
Sliedrecht is well-known for its many large companies that specialize in dredging. Dredging means digging up sand and mud from the bottom of rivers, lakes, or oceans. This helps to make waterways deeper for ships or to create new land. Companies like Boskalis and IHC Merwede started here. Every two years, Sliedrecht hosts the Dredging Festival, which celebrates this important industry. You can also visit the Nationaal Baggermuseum (National Dredging Museum) in Sliedrecht to learn all about dredging and salvage (rescuing ships or cargo).
