Adrianus "Aad" Nuis (1933–2007) was a Dutch politician and a political scientist. He was a member of the Democrats 66 (D66) party.
Aad Nuis finished his military service in New Guinea. After spending some time in Jamaica, he came back to the Netherlands. He became involved in a movement that wanted to change the role of the monarchy. In the 1970s, he worked as a literary critic for the Haagse Post newspaper. He then became more active in the D66 political party.

Aad Nuis's Political Career
Aad Nuis held several important roles in Dutch politics.
Early Political Roles
- He served in the States-Provincial of Gelderland from 1978 to 1981. This is like being a member of a regional government.
- He was a Member of the House of Representatives from 1981 to 1982. This is part of the national parliament.
- He also served as a Member of the Senate from 1983 to 1986. The Senate is another part of the Dutch parliament.
State Secretary for Education, Culture and Science
- From 1994 to 1998, Aad Nuis was the State Secretary for Education, Culture and Science. This means he helped lead the government's work in these important areas.
- He worked alongside Prime Minister Wim Kok during this time.
Aad Nuis as a Writer and Advocate for Books
Beyond politics, Aad Nuis was also very active in the world of literature and books.
Author and Poet
- He was a poet, author, and translator.
- His first poetry book, Twee schelven hooi, was published in 1968.
- He was chosen to be part of the Maatschappij der Nederlandse Letterkunde, which is a respected Dutch literary society.
Promoting Books and Reading
- After he retired from politics, Aad Nuis focused mainly on literature and books.
- In 2000, he became the Chairman of the Dutch Literary Production and Translation Fund. This fund helps Dutch books get published and translated into other languages.
- From 2001 to 2007, he was the Chairman of the Koninklijke Vereniging van het Boekenvak (KVB). This organization represents all recognized Dutch publishers and booksellers.
- As Chairman of the KVB, Aad Nuis played a big part in making sure books had fixed prices. This led to the "Law Fixed Book Prices of 2004." This law helped protect bookstores and publishers.
