How Many People Live in Zwijndrecht?
Zwijndrecht is one of the "Drecht" cities, which are a group of towns in this area. It is part of the suburban zone located south of Rotterdam, a much larger city.
The town has grown a lot over the years. In 1960, only about 6,000 people lived there. Today, the population is around 45,000.
Since 2003, the municipality of Zwijndrecht also includes the smaller villages of Heerjansdam and Kleine-Lindt. The total population of the municipality was 44,546 in 2014.
Interestingly, Zwijndrecht has the highest number of people from Estonia living in the Netherlands. The Evangelical Theological Academy, a school for religious studies, is also located here.
A Look Back: Zwijndrecht's History
Zwijndrecht first started to develop during the Middle Ages. It is thought that people could walk across a shallow part of the Oude Maas river to get there from Dordrecht. Zwijndrecht quickly benefited from Dordrecht's strong economy. Dordrecht was a very important economic center in the Netherlands around the 1450s.
The water around Zwijndrecht was very important for its early growth. During the Middle Ages, most people living in the town made their living by catching fish from the nearby rivers.
From Farming to Factories
Starting in the 1600s, Zwijndrecht became well-known for its horticulture products. Horticulture is the art of growing plants, like fruits, vegetables, and flowers. Some of these products were even sent to other countries, such as England and Germany. The Zwijndrechtse vegetable auction, located next to the railroad, was one of the biggest in the whole country.
Later, in the 1800s, Zwijndrecht changed into an industrial town. This means it became a place with many factories. There were glass factories, soap factories, and shipyards. Other products like beer, rice, and chocolate were also made here.
In 2003, the small village of Heerjansdam became part of the Zwijndrecht municipality. This increased the population to about 45,000 people.
