Smartsville is a small community in Yuba County, California. It is located in the beautiful foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Smartsville is one of the many historic towns in California's gold country. Today, it is recognized as a California Historical Landmark. The town sits about 669 feet (204 m) above sea level. It is located about 15 miles (24 km) east of Marysville, right along State Route 20. In 2010, the population of Smartsville was 177 people.

The Story of Smartsville
Smartsville gets its name from a man named James Smart. He was a hotel owner during the exciting time of the Gold Rush. In the spring of 1856, James Smart built his hotel in the area.
You can still see many piles of rock and gravel around Smartsville. These are called placer mining tailings. They were left behind from the gold mining activities long ago.
How the Name Changed
A post office opened in Smartsville in 1865. In 1909, the U.S. Post Office Department decided to change the town's name to "Smartville." This change was made even stronger by a similar decision in 1947. However, in August 2008, local residents asked to have the original name back. The Board on Geographic Names agreed, and the town officially became "Smartsville" again. The story of the town and its name change was even shown on the TV show California's Gold with Huell Howser.

The Smartville Cemetery is a very old and important cemetery in the area. It holds the history of many people who lived in Smartsville.
Smartsville's Unique Geology
Smartsville is so important that a large geological area is named after it. This area is called the Smartville Block. It is a type of land formation called a terrane. It was formed by plate tectonics in the western foothills of the Sierra Nevada.
Scientists discovered that much of the gold in the Mother Lode Gold Country was found where the Smartville Block meets the North American Plate. This shows how special the geology of the area is.

Smartsville covers an area of about 0.7 square miles (1.9 square kilometers). All of this area is land. There is no water within the community's boundaries.
