Smoky Dome is a really tall mountain in Idaho. It's the highest peak in a group of mountains called the Soldier Mountains. Imagine standing on top of it – you'd be over 10,000 feet (that's more than 3,000 meters) above sea level! It's located in Camas County, near a town called Fairfield, and it's part of the beautiful Sawtooth National Forest.
About Smoky Dome
Smoky Dome stands at 10,095 feet (about 3,077 meters) high. This makes it a very prominent peak in Idaho. From its top, you can see amazing views of other mountain ranges. These include the Pioneer, Smoky, and Trinity Mountains. You can also spot the Bennett Hills from up high.
The mountain rises about 5,000 feet (around 1,524 meters) above the nearby Camas Prairie. This means it really stands out from the flat land around it.
Getting to the Top
The main way to reach the top of Smoky Dome starts near the Soldier Mountain Ski Area. You'll follow an old dirt road that is now known as trail 087. This trail heads west and leads you up the mountain.
Next, the route turns onto trail 185. This trail crosses the South Fork of Soldier Creek. Once you are on the ridge above the ski area, you just follow the trail. It goes along the ridge until it ends below the second peak. From there, you keep following the ridge over the second and third peaks until you finally reach Smoky Dome. There are also many other paths you can take to explore the mountain.
Lakes and Streams
The northern parts of Smoky Dome are drained by a stream called Boardman Creek. This creek flows into the South Fork of the Boise River.
Northwest of the peak, you'll find four lakes named after Smoky Dome. These are Lower, Upper 1, Upper 2, and West Smoky Dome Lakes. Nearby mountains include Boardman Peak and Iron Mountain, both located northwest of Smoky Dome.
