History of Sobieski: How the City Got Its Name
The city of Sobieski is named after a famous Polish king, John III Sobieski. His family, the House of Sobieski, was very important in Polish history. Many people in the town have Polish American heritage, which is why they chose this name.
Sobieski officially became a village on December 2, 1915. It separated from Swan River Township on June 10, 1920. The area where Sobieski is now located was once home to earlier communities.
- From 1875 to 1904, there was a post office called "Ledoux." It was named after Frank X. Ledoux, who owned a store and was the first postmaster.
- Later, the community was known as "Swan River." This was not the same as an older post office in Benton County.
- In 1918, the name was changed to Sobieski.
- The area was also known by other names like "Green's Ferry" and "Aitkinsville." Aitkinsville was named after William A. Aitkin, a fur trader who is buried there. Aitkin County is also named after him.
Many local people in Sobieski have Kashubian-Polish heritage. The name "Jan Sobieski" fits well with their history. He was known for his association with the Kashubian Polish Hussars, a famous cavalry, who helped defeat the Ottomans in battle.
