A song is a special kind of musical composition that is sung by the human voice. Imagine a tune that your voice makes, often carrying the main melody (a series of musical notes that sound good together). Songs use patterns of sound and silence to create their unique feel. They usually have a clear structure, with parts that repeat or change slightly. If a song is sung without any instruments, it's called a cappella.

The words written specifically for a song are called lyrics. Sometimes, an old poem is given new music; this is often called an art song. Songs that are simple and learned by listening, often passed down through families or communities, are known as folk songs. Songs made for many people to enjoy, often sung by professional singers who record them or perform live, are called popular songs. These popular songs are usually created by professional songwriters and composers.

Songs can be performed in many ways! A single singer might perform alone, or with background singers. You might hear a duet (two singers), a trio (three singers), or even a larger group singing together in harmony. While we use "song" for many types of vocal music, very large classical pieces like opera often use different terms, like aria. Singers can perform with just one instrument, like a guitar or piano, or with a whole backing band or orchestra. In some music styles, like jazz, singers might even make up parts of the melody as they go along! In classical music, singers usually read the exact notes written by the composer.

When many voices sing different parts together in polyphony or harmony, these are often called choral works. Songs come in countless forms and types, showing how creative people can be with music! Sometimes, even instrumental pieces (without singing) are called "songs," like the famous Songs Without Words for piano.

Types of Songs

Songs come in many different styles, each with its own history and sound! Let's explore some of the main types.

Classical Art Songs

Art songs are special songs created for classical musicians to perform. They often feature a singer accompanied by a piano or another instrument. To sing an art song well, a performer needs strong vocal skills and a deep understanding of the language and poetry. These songs are different from popular songs because they often use serious poetry and require a lot of training.

Art songs have a long tradition in many European countries and other places with classical music. In German-speaking countries, they are called "Kunstlied," which means "art song," to show they are serious compositions, unlike simple folk songs. The words are usually written by a poet, and the music is composed separately. Art songs can be more complex than folk or popular songs. The instrument playing alongside the voice is a very important part of the music, sometimes even carrying the main tune!

These songs grew out of traditions like singing romantic love songs and religious songs. Famous composers like Henry Purcell wrote some of the earliest art songs. Over time, this style influenced many other types of music, including popular songs.

Folk Songs: Stories from the Past

Folk songs are like musical stories passed down through generations. Often, no one knows who first wrote them, and they are shared by listening and remembering. They are a big part of a country's or culture's identity. Sometimes, a popular song becomes a folk song when people forget who the original author was, and it just becomes part of the community's shared music.

Folk songs exist in almost every culture around the world. The German term Volkslied was created in the late 1700s when people started collecting old songs and writing new ones in a similar style. Even today, many folk artists write and record their own original songs, keeping the tradition alive. This led to the "singer-songwriter" style, where artists sing their own personal stories, often with just a guitar.

Folk songs cover many topics, including ballads (story songs), lullabies (songs to help babies sleep), love songs, sad songs, dance songs, work songs, and songs for special rituals or events.

Songs About Sports and Games

Some folk songs are about sports and fun activities. These "sporting songs" celebrate things like horse racing, games, and other pastimes.

In the 1800s, it was common to hear songs about famous boxers or successful racehorses. While some of these older songs are less common today, they are still part of our musical history. For example, "D'ye ken John Peel" is a well-known song about a foxhunter that is often played as a marching tune. Musicians like A. L. Lloyd and the High Level Ranters have recorded collections of these traditional sporting songs.

Lute Songs: Music from Long Ago

Lute songs were a popular style of music from the late 1500s to the early 1600s, mainly in England and France. These songs usually featured a single singer accompanied by a lute, which is an old stringed instrument similar to a guitar. The music was often simple in structure, with verses that repeated. Sometimes, other instruments like a bass viol or even more voices would join in.

Part Songs: Singing Together

A part song is a type of choral music written for several singers, where each person sings a different vocal part. These songs are usually not religious. They are commonly sung by a SATB choir, which means a group with Soprano, Alto, Tenor, and Bass voices. Sometimes, they are sung by all-male or all-female groups.

Patter Songs: Fast and Funny

A patter song is known for being very fast, with words sung quickly one after another. Each syllable of the text usually gets its own musical note. These songs are a favorite in comic opera, especially in the works of Gilbert and Sullivan, and they are also used in musicals and other performances to create a funny and exciting effect.
