Sonic Battle is an exciting fighting video game from 2003. It was made by Sonic Team for the Game Boy Advance handheld system. This game is the second fighting game in the popular Sonic the Hedgehog series. The first one was Sonic the Fighters. Sonic Battle first came out in Japan in December 2003. It then came to North America and Europe in early 2004.

How to Play Sonic Battle

Shadow the Hedgehog battles Miles "Tails" Prower and Knuckles the Echidna. The 3D fighting area looks like grassy ruins with Chao designs.

In Sonic Battle, you fight in cool 3D areas with up to four players. Each character has their own special moves and powers. Most attacks use the B button. This includes quick combos, air attacks, and strong hits. You can use an "Upper Attack" to send opponents flying up. A "Heavy Attack" knocks them far away. An "Aim Attack" lets you chase them after a Heavy Attack.

Pressing the A button makes your character jump. The L button helps you block incoming attacks. If you hold L, your character can even heal some damage. All playable characters also have unique special moves. There are three types: Shot, Power, and Set (Trap).

  • Shot moves let you use projectiles to hit enemies from a distance.
  • Power moves are strong, quick attacks that deal lots of damage.
  • Trap moves involve placing bombs or other surprises for your enemies.

You can only pick a few special moves for each battle. You set them to three slots: Ground, Air, and Defend. The "Ground" move is used when you press R while on the ground. The "Air" move is used when you press R while jumping. The "Defend" slot works differently. If you set a special move to "Defend," it will automatically block the same type of special move from an enemy.

Health and Ichikoro Gauge

Every player has two important bars: a health bar and an Ichikoro Gauge. When your health bar runs out, you get "KO'd" (knocked out). In a survival match, you lose a life. In a KO match, the player who knocked you out gets a point. You choose your Ground, Air, and Defend settings at the start of each match. You also choose them every time you respawn after being KO'd.

The Ichikoro Gauge fills up as you take damage, block attacks, or heal. When it's full, your next special move will instantly knock out any enemy it hits! But if an enemy uses an Ichikoro move and you have the right "Defend" setting, your own Ichikoro Gauge will fill up instantly. Healing also slowly fills your gauge, but be careful, you can still be attacked while healing.

Characters in the Game

The game features ten characters you can play as. Eight of these characters are part of the game's Story Mode:

As you win battles in Story Mode, you earn "skill cards." Emerl can use these cards to learn new moves and even use the abilities of other characters!

Fun Mini-Games

Sonic Battle also includes five fun mini-games:

  • Soniclash: In this game, players try to knock their opponents off the fighting area to earn points.
  • Tails' Fly and Get: Players fly around and try to collect more rings than their opponents.
  • Knuckles' Mine Hunt: This is a single-player game. It's like the classic computer game Minesweeper.
  • Amy's Treasure Island: Players move around and search for hidden emeralds.
  • Shadow's Speed Demon: In this game, players race against each other to see who is the fastest.

The Story of Sonic Battle

The story begins with Dr. Eggman reading his grandfather's diary. His grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, had found an amazing artifact. It was a 4000-year-old living weapon called the Gizoid, made by an ancient civilization. Eggman tries to make the Gizoid work, but he can't. So, he leaves it at Emerald Beach.

Later, Sonic the Hedgehog finds the Gizoid. When Sonic shows off his speed, the Gizoid wakes up and connects with him. Sonic names the Gizoid "Emerl" because it can use the powerful Chaos Emeralds. Emerl can perfectly copy any move it sees. Soon, Emerl gets involved with Sonic's friends and rivals.

Through meeting Tails, Rouge, Knuckles, Amy, Cream, and Shadow, Emerl learns about the world. He also learns about important ideas like friendship. As they train together, the group finds out that Emerl gets stronger and smarter with each Chaos Emerald he finds. So, they start looking for the remaining Emeralds to help Emerl grow.

While searching, Eggman's forces keep attacking them. Eggman now wants the Gizoid back! He sends out a rebuilt E-102 Gamma and many imperfect copies of Emerl called "E-121 Phi."

Eventually, all the Chaos Emeralds are found, and Emerl becomes fully aware. In a final attempt, Eggman tricks Emerl into coming to his new Death Egg space station. Emerl and Eggman battle, and Emerl wins. But then, Eggman uses his new Final Egg Blaster. This forces Emerl to break his link with Sonic and connect with Eggman instead.

However, this overloads Emerl! His personality disappears, and he goes out of control. The rogue Gizoid then aims the blaster at the planet. Sonic must stop him before the world is destroyed! Sonic defeats Emerl. For a brief moment, Emerl returns to his old self and says goodbye to his friends. Then, he overloads with energy and explodes, leaving behind the pieces of the Chaos Emeralds. Sonic returns home to his friends, who are sad about losing Emerl. When asked if Emerl is truly gone, Sonic tells everyone that they will see him again someday.

Game Creation and Release

Sonic Battle was first officially announced at two big events in 2003: the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) and the Tokyo Game Show. Both events had playable demos where people could try out the game.

The game was released in Japan in late 2003. This was part of the "Year of Sonic" celebration. In early 2004, the game was released in the United States by THQ. This happened after a deal between THQ and Sega. For other countries around the world, Sega Europe and THQ worked together to publish the game.
