Sophie Grégoire Trudeau (born April 24, 1975), also known as Sophie Grégoire, is a Canadian who used to work as a television host. She was married to Justin Trudeau, who is the 23rd prime minister of Canada. They separated in 2023. Sophie is very involved in helping others through charity work and public speaking. She often talks about important topics like protecting the environment, supporting women's rights, and helping children. She was also an ambassador for the WE Charity, a group that helps young people.

Early Life and Education

Sophie Grégoire was born on April 24, 1975, in Montreal, Quebec. She was the only child of Jean Grégoire, who worked with stocks, and Estelle Blais, a nurse. Her family first lived north of Montreal in Sainte-Adèle. When Sophie was four, they moved to the Mount Royal area of Montreal.

In Mount Royal, Sophie was a classmate and friend of Michel Trudeau. Michel was the youngest son of former Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and his wife Margaret. Michel was also the brother of Sophie's future husband, Justin Trudeau.

Sophie has shared that she had a happy childhood. She was a good student who made friends easily and loved sports and being outdoors. When she was about 17, she faced a health challenge related to eating. She bravely shared this with her parents in her early 20s and spent two years getting better. She says that therapy, the support of her family, and yoga helped her recover.

Sophie went to high school at Pensionnat du Saint-Nom-de-Marie. She then studied at Collège Jean-de-Brébeuf. Sophie Grégoire's first job was at an advertising company. She started as a receptionist and assistant and later became an account manager. After three years, she decided to go to radio and television school. She felt like she had found what she was meant to do.

After her studies, Sophie worked in a newsroom, writing news updates. Because she loved culture, arts, and films, she applied for a job as an entertainment reporter at a Quebec TV station called LCN. She got the job! She reported on entertainment for LCN's Showbiz show. She also worked on other TV shows like Salut, Bonjour! and Clin d'œil. She hosted shows for Canal Évasion and Canal Z. Sophie also co-hosted morning radio shows and contributed to Radio-Canada. In the mid-2000s, she also worked as a personal shopper.

In 2012, Sophie became a certified yoga instructor. She also works as a professional public speaker, mostly talking about issues important to women.

Reporting for eTalk

In 2005, Sophie met some people from CTV Television Network at a charity event. This led to her being hired in September 2005 as a reporter for eTalk. This is a Canadian entertainment news show. Until 2010, she was eTalk's reporter for Quebec. She focused on reporting about celebrities who were involved in charity and activism.

Charity Work

Sophie Grégoire is very active in charity work. She volunteers for many Canadian charities and non-profit groups. She supports causes that help people with eating disorders, like Sheena's Place. She also helps La Maison Bleue, a center for pregnant mothers who need support.

Sophie Grégoire first met Justin Trudeau when they were children growing up in Montreal. Sophie was a classmate and friend of Justin's younger brother, Michel. Sophie and Justin met again as adults in June 2003 when they were asked to co-host a charity event. They started dating a few months later. They got engaged in October 2004 and were married on May 28, 2005, in Montreal. They have three children: Xavier James, Ella-Grace Margaret, and Hadrien Gregoire.

After her husband became a Member of Parliament in 2008, Sophie continued to live in Montreal with their children. Justin stayed in Ottawa during the week for his work. In June 2013, after Justin became the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, the family sold their Montreal home. They then moved to a rented home in Ottawa.

Justin Trudeau became the Prime Minister of Canada on November 4, 2015. Sophie Grégoire Trudeau prefers to use the name "Grégoire Trudeau" without a hyphen.

Sophie is fluent in three languages: French, English, and Spanish.

In March 2020, Sophie had flu-like symptoms after returning from a trip to the United Kingdom. She isolated herself at home with her family. Later that day, it was announced that she had tested positive for COVID-19. By March 28, she had recovered.

On August 2, 2023, Justin Trudeau and Sophie Grégoire announced their separation.

"Smile Back at Me"

On January 18, 2016, Sophie Grégoire Trudeau decided to sing a song she wrote called "Smile Back at Me." She sang it at the end of a speech honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day at Ottawa City Hall. Many people in the audience gave her a standing ovation. Some people who heard the song online created new versions of it. Sophie had received training in music before.
