Sorn is a small village located in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Its name comes from the Scottish Gaelic word Sorn, which means a kiln (a type of oven). The village is built right on the River Ayr. About 350 people live in Sorn. Its close neighbour is the village of Catrine. Just outside Sorn, you can find the historic Sorn Castle.

Discovering Sorn's Past

Sorn has a long history, once being part of a larger area called a "parish" in Ayrshire. A parish is like a local district. Some old records say that Sorn was created as its own parish in 1658. Before that, it was part of the nearby Mauchline parish. This means it was "disjoined," or separated, to become its own area.

Sorn's Connection to the Covenanters

Sorn also has ties to the Covenanters. These were Scottish people in the 17th century who supported a specific type of Presbyterian church. They often faced challenges for their beliefs.

Sorn Village Life Today

Life in Sorn today offers several local services for its residents. You can find a pub, a cafe, and a church. There is also a motorbike shop and a television shop. The village has a community hall and a bowling green, which are great places for people to gather. Sorn also has its own primary school for younger students. In 2007, there was a plan to close the school, but it remained open.

Sorn's Beautiful Blooms

Sorn is well-known for its success in the Britain in Bloom competition. This contest celebrates beautiful gardens and floral displays in towns and villages. In 2004, Sorn won a gold award in the "Small Villages" group. It also received "Highly Commended Certificates" many times in the 1980s. Sorn is also special because it was the first village in Scotland where all cars park off the main roads.

Exploring the River Ayr Way

The village of Sorn is located on the River Ayr Way. This path opened in 2006 and was Scotland's first long-distance walking route that goes from the source of a river all the way to the sea. It's a great way to explore the beautiful countryside around Sorn.
