About the South Branch Birch River

The South Branch Birch River starts from a small pond. This pond is located in a part of Maine called Maine Township 16, Range 9, WELS. From there, the river flows first towards the southeast. Then, it turns and flows east.

Where Rivers Meet

The South Branch Birch River meets another river. This meeting point is called a confluence. It joins with the North Branch. This meeting happens in the town of Eagle Lake. When these two branches meet, they form a larger river. This larger river is known as the Birch River.

Part of a Bigger Water System

The South Branch Birch River is part of a larger water system. This system is called the Fish River watershed. A watershed is an area of land. All the water in that area drains into a specific river or lake. The Fish River watershed eventually drains north. It flows into the Saint John River.

The Saint John River is a very long river. It flows southeast. Finally, it reaches the Bay of Fundy. The Bay of Fundy is located in New Brunswick, Canada. So, the water from the South Branch Birch River travels a long way. It goes from a small pond in Maine all the way to the ocean.
