The South Branch Trout River is a small river in Vermont, United States. It is a branch of the Trout River. This river flows through Belvidere and Montgomery. These towns are in Lamoille County and Franklin County.

A road called South Main Street (VT 118) runs along the eastern side of the river. This makes it easy to explore the valley. The river usually freezes over from mid-December to mid-March. However, it's safest to walk on the ice from late December to early March.

Where the River Starts

The South Branch Trout River begins at a lake in Lamoille County. This lake is about 0.35 km (0.22 mi) long. It is surrounded by mountains.

The River's Journey

From its start, the South Branch Trout River flows for about 6.0 kilometres (3.7 mi). It mostly travels through forests and mountains. The river follows Route 118 for much of its path.

Here's how the river flows:

  • It goes 0.7 kilometres (0.43 mi) north through a deep valley in Lamoille County. Then it enters Franklin County. Here, a small stream joins it from the southwest.
  • Next, it flows 1.8 kilometres (1.1 mi) north in a deep valley. It continues to follow Route 118. Several small streams join it along this part of its journey. Pacific Brook also flows into it from the east.
  • The river then travels 1.4 kilometres (0.87 mi) north. It makes a few turns, including a loop near Hectorville. More small streams add to its flow. Tamarack Brook also joins it from the southwest.
  • Finally, it flows 2.1 kilometres (1.3 mi) north. It makes another loop before Hutchins Bridge Road. More streams join it here. Then, it reaches its end, flowing into the main Trout River.

Where the River Ends

The South Branch Trout River empties into the Trout River. This happens on the southwest side of Montgomery Center. From there, the water travels about 9.1 km (5.7 mi) northwest along the Trout River. After that, it flows westward for about 66.3 km (41.2 mi). This journey ends when the water reaches the eastern shore of Lake Champlain.

River's Name
