South Dayton is a small village located in Cattaraugus County, New York, in the United States. In 2020, about 564 people lived there. The village is found in the southwest part of the town of Dayton. It is also very close to the border of Chautauqua County.

History of South Dayton
Early Names and Growth
South Dayton was once known as "Pine Valley." This name was later used for the local school district, which is shared with nearby Cherry Creek. The school campus is just southwest of the village.
The village started to grow a lot after a railroad arrived in 1875. Because of this growth, South Dayton officially became a village in 1915.
Famous Events and Filming Locations
A notable event in South Dayton's history happened on October 12, 1833. A religious leader named Joseph Smith reportedly received an important message while visiting the home of Freeman Nickerson. At that time, the area was part of the town of Perrysburg.
South Dayton has also been a setting for movies! It was used as a place to film scenes for the 1987 comedy movie Planes, Trains and Automobiles. The village also appeared in the classic film The Natural, which starred the famous actor Robert Redford.
Geography of South Dayton
South Dayton is located at coordinates 42°21′46″N 79°3′6″W / 42.36278°N 79.05167°W. The western edge of the village is right on the line that separates it from Chautauqua County.
The United States Census Bureau says that the village covers about 1 square mile (2.6 square kilometers) of land. There is no water area within the village limits.
Roads and Railroads
Two main roads pass through South Dayton. These are County Road 2, which is called Main Street inside the village, and NY-322.
The New York and Lake Erie Railroad also serves the village. This railroad carries goods and sometimes offers passenger rides.
Skunks Corners
In the southwestern part of the village, there is a place called Skunks Corners. It is a well-known crossroads in the area.

Notable People from South Dayton
South Dayton is home to some well-known individuals:
- Bill Bergey is a retired National Football League (NFL) player. He was born and grew up in the village. He was chosen for the Pro Bowl five times during his career.
- Nick Langworthy is a U.S. Representative for New York's 23rd congressional district. This means he is a member of the United States Congress, representing his area in New York since 2023.
- Tim Nobles is a very successful basketball coach. He led the girls' basketball team at Pine Valley Central School to win seven State Championships. He ended his coaching career in 2015 with 536 wins. The basketball court at Pine Valley is now named "Tim Nobles Court" in his honor. He was also added to the Section VI Hall of Fame in 2018.
