The South Greenhill River is a cool river found in the northeastern part of Ontario, Canada. It flows through two areas called Algoma District and Sudbury District. This river is part of a huge water system that eventually leads to James Bay, and it's a smaller river that joins the Greenhill River.

Where the River Flows: Its Journey

The South Greenhill River starts in a wide-open area in Winget Township, which is in Algoma District. This spot is part of a special protected area called the South Greenhill Lake Sand Delta Conservation Reserve.

From Source to Lake

From its start, the river flows southwest into Rennie Township in Sudbury District. It then reaches South Greenhill Lake. The lake actually turns the river around, sending it back northeast into Winget Township.

Through Townships and Beyond

After leaving the lake, the river enters Amik Township. Here, it leaves the conservation reserve. The river continues its journey northeast, picking up a smaller stream called Mang Creek along the way. It then passes through a small corner of Abigo Township.

Meeting the Greenhill River

Finally, the South Greenhill River flows into Nebotik Township. This is where it meets its main river, the Greenhill River. The Greenhill River then continues its path, joining the Missinaibi River and the Moose River, before all that water eventually reaches James Bay.

River's Watery Home: The Drainage Basin

Almost all the land that drains water into the South Greenhill River is located within Algoma District. There's only a small part of the river's path, including the tip of South Greenhill Lake and a tiny creek, that is in Sudbury District. This whole area is called the river's drainage basin or watershed.

Wildlife Around the River

The South Greenhill Lake Sand Delta Conservation Reserve is a special place for animals. You might spot mammals like the pine marten (a type of weasel) and beavers. Birds like the red-tailed hawk also live here. It's a great spot to see nature!

Fun Things to Do: Recreation

If you love fishing or watching wildlife, there's a special camp on the south side of South Greenhill Lake. People can rent this camp to enjoy the remote area, catch some fish, and observe the amazing animals that live there.
