The South Telford Heritage Trail is a cool walking path that goes in a big circle through the town of Telford in England. It's special because it takes you past 49 amazing old places, called heritage sites. These sites help tell the story of Telford's past.

Discovering the Trail

This fun trail starts and finishes in Telford Town Park. As you walk, you'll explore different areas like Stirchley & Brookside, Madeley, Dawley Hamlets, and the famous Ironbridge Gorge.

The path follows old routes where canals, tramways, and railways used to be. You'll also see where old coal mines, brick factories, pottery workshops, and ironworks once stood. These were all very busy places a long time ago! You can walk the whole trail in about 5 to 6 hours.

Telford's Amazing Past

How Telford Began

Telford is a "new town," which means it was planned and built starting in 1968. But even though it's a new town, it includes many much older villages and communities. Some of these places were even mentioned in the Domesday Book, a super old record from over 900 years ago!

A Busy Industrial Hub

In the 1700s and 1800s, this area was a very important place for industry. There were lots of coal mines digging up fuel, huge ironworks making metal, and factories producing china and bricks. It was a bustling time with many people working hard.

From Old to New

By the early 1900s, much of this industry started to slow down. By the 1960s, many of the old mines and factories were no longer used. This left behind things like old mine shafts that weren't covered, broken-down buildings, empty quarries, and piles of waste from the mines.

When Telford was built, people worked hard to clean up and hide many of these old industrial "scars." But even with all the changes, there are still many cool heritage sites left in South Telford. These include the old canals, railways, mines, ironworks, and historic buildings that show what life was like in the past. Many of these important places are easy to miss if you're just walking by, and their stories aren't always well-known.

Why the Trail Was Created

The main goal of the South Telford Heritage Trail is to shine a light on the area's rich history. It gives you a way to explore on your own, linking both well-known and hidden historical spots in South Telford. Plus, it gives you information about each place, so you can learn as you go!
