History of Southold
Southold holds a special place in history. It was the first English settlement in what would become New York State. This happened because Southold was part of Connecticut at the time, not the Dutch-owned New Netherland.
Early Settlers
English Puritans, who were a group of Christians seeking religious freedom, came from New Haven, Connecticut. They settled in Southold on October 21, 1640. Their leader was Reverend John Youngs.
The first person to step ashore after drawing lots was Peter Hallock. Other families who helped start the settlement included Barnabas Horton, John Budd, and John Conklin. The land was bought from the Corchaugs, a local Native American tribe, in the summer of 1640. The Native American name for this area was Yenicott.
Changing Control
Southold was under the control of New Haven until 1662. Then, it was part of Connecticut until 1674. In 1673, when the Dutch took control of New York again, the towns in eastern Long Island, including Southold, did not want to join them.
The Dutch tried to force them, but the colonists, with help from Connecticut, fought them off. When New York became English again in 1674, these eastern towns still wanted to be part of Connecticut. Connecticut agreed, but James, Duke of York, who owned New York, forced them to join New York.
The Duke of York threatened to take away their land rights if they did not agree. So, by 1676, they became part of New York. This was partly because New Haven had hidden three judges who had sentenced the Duke's father, King Charles I, to death in 1649.
How Southold Got Its Name
Some people believe the name "Southold" is a mistake for Southwold. Southwold is a town in the English county of Suffolk, which is the same name as the county in New York. Reverend John Youngs was born and grew up in Southwold, England.
Also, an area in Southold, New York, is called Reydon Shores. Reydon is a village next to Southwold in England, and it was where John Youngs' wife lived. Another idea is that "Southold" means a "holding" (or piece of land) south of New Haven, where the first settlers came from. Many old buildings in Southold are part of the Southold Historic District, which was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
Geography
Southold is a place with both land and water. The total area of the CDP is about 11.3 square miles (29.3 square kilometers). Most of this, about 10.5 square miles (27.1 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 0.8 square miles (2.2 square kilometers), is water.
