In 2020, about 4,223 people lived in Spackenkill. It is part of the larger New York metropolitan area. Spackenkill is located within the town of Poughkeepsie. Many children in the area go to public schools in the Spackenkill Union Free School District. A large IBM company building is also in this community. Many people who work there live in Spackenkill.

Spackenkill has several smaller, informal neighborhoods. These include Hagantown, Nassau, King George, Beechwood, Crown Heights, and Kingwood Park. Some of the local schools are found in these neighborhoods.

Spackenkill is in the south-central part of the town of Poughkeepsie. It is about 4 miles (6.4 km) south of the city of Poughkeepsie. Nearby communities include Crown Heights to the southwest. Red Oaks Mill is located to the east.

For train travel, the closest stations are Poughkeepsie station to the north. You can also find the New Hamburg station to the south. These stations offer Amtrak and Metro North train services. Years ago, until 1952, local trains also stopped at the Camelot station. This station was near where the IBM campus is today.

One notable person from this area is Hevad Khan. He is a professional poker player. Hevad Khan finished in sixth place in a very big poker tournament. This was the Main Event of the 2007 World Series of Poker.
