Preceded by Spider-Man (1994 TV series)
Followed by Spider-Man: The New Animated Series

Spider-Man Unlimited is an exciting American animated show about the Marvel superhero Spider-Man. It first aired in 1999. Even though many people watched it, the show was canceled after only a few episodes. This happened because other popular shows like Pokémon and Digimon were also new at the time. Later, Fox Kids started showing the episodes again from 2000 to 2001. The series ended with 13 episodes, but the story was not finished, leaving fans wanting more!

About the Show

This cartoon was made by Saban Entertainment. It was originally planned to be a simple cartoon based on early Amazing Spider-Man comic books. However, Sony and Marvel were already making a Spider-Man movie. This meant the show couldn't use Spider-Man's classic red and blue suit or adapt those early comic stories.

The creators had some interesting ideas that didn't make it into the show. One idea was that Spider-Man would get stuck on a "Counter-Earth" where his Uncle Ben never died. Because of this, Peter Parker wouldn't have learned the important lesson about great power and responsibility. He might even have become Venom! But Marvel Comics didn't like the idea of two Peter Parkers, so it was changed.

Unlike older cartoons that used hand-painted pictures, Spider-Man Unlimited used new digital animation techniques. This made the show look different and more modern. Even though the show ended quickly, many ideas for a second season were written, including how the story would finish. Sadly, these episodes were never made.

What's the Story?

The story begins when John Jameson, an astronaut, launches a mission to a planet called Counter-Earth. Spider-Man tries to stop his enemies, Venom and Carnage, from sneaking onto the spaceship. He fails, and the public and J. Jonah Jameson (John's father) blame Spider-Man for John's disappearance. Spider-Man becomes a wanted hero.

When John Jameson sends a distress signal from Counter-Earth, Spider-Man decides he must rescue him. He gets a special new suit from Reed Richards that has cool features like built-in web-shooters, stealth technology, and weapons to fight the symbiotes. Spider-Man travels to Counter-Earth.

On Counter-Earth, Spider-Man discovers that John Jameson has joined a group of freedom fighters. They are fighting against the High Evolutionary, who rules the planet. The High Evolutionary created creatures called Beastials, which are part-animal and part-human. On Counter-Earth, Beastials are in charge, and humans are treated as second-class citizens.

John Jameson doesn't want to leave until the Beastials are defeated. So, Spider-Man decides to stay and help. He pretends to be Peter Parker, living with a doctor named Naoko Yamada-Jones and her son Shane. As Spider-Man, he fights the High Evolutionary, his special guards called the Knights of Wundagore, and his robot army, the Machine Men.

Soon, Spider-Man learns that Venom and Carnage are also on Counter-Earth. They are working for a huge group of symbiotes called the Synoptic, which acts like one big mind. The series also shows John Jameson turning into the Man-Wolf. Plus, there are hero versions of villains like the Green Goblin and Vulture, and Counter-Earth versions of Kraven the Hunter and Electro.

Main Characters

Heroes

  • Peter Parker / Spider-Man (voiced by Rino Romano) – Peter Parker is a photographer who gained spider-like powers after being bitten by a radioactive spider. He becomes the superhero Spider-Man. In this series, he gets a new high-tech suit to fight Venom and Carnage on Counter-Earth. He lives with Dr. Naoko and Shane while helping the human rebels.
  • Dr. Naoko Yamada-Jones (voiced by Akiko Morison) – A kind doctor on Counter-Earth. After Peter saves her son Shane, she lets Peter live in her home. She doesn't like Spider-Man, not knowing he is actually Peter Parker. Her husband, Hector Jones, is missing.
  • Shane Yamada-Jones (voiced by Rhys Huber) – Naoko's 10-year-old son. He looks up to Peter and gets upset when Peter and Naoko argue. He also doesn't know Peter's secret identity.
  • John Jameson / Man-Wolf (voiced by John Payne II as John Jameson, Scott McNeil as Man-Wolf) – An astronaut who crashed on Counter-Earth. He leads the human rebels fighting the High Evolutionary. He later transforms into the powerful Man-Wolf when he gets angry.
  • Counter-Earth Rebellion – A group of humans fighting for freedom against the High Evolutionary.
    • Karen O'Malley (voiced by Kim Hawthorne) – John Jameson's friend and the second-in-command of the rebels. She has special strength and speed because the High Evolutionary experimented on her when she was very young.
    • Daniel Bromely (voiced by Christopher Gaze) – Another rebel member whose family was taken by the High Evolutionary. He joined the rebels to fight back.
    • Git Hoskins – A quiet rebel who has bandages all over him. He can stretch and control his bandages because of an experiment done by Sir Ram.
    • X-51 (voiced by Dale Wilson) – A robot called a Machine Man who became good and decided to protect humans. He joins the rebels after Spider-Man and others save him from the High Evolutionary.

Villains

  • High Evolutionary (voiced by Richard Newman) – The main villain. He was disgusted with humans on Earth, so he went to Counter-Earth to create a "perfect" society. He made Beastials (half-human, half-animal creatures) to be loyal to him. He rules New York City on Counter-Earth, with Beastials living above humans. His goal is to create a paradise, no matter what it takes.
  • Knights of Wundagore – A special group of elite Beastials who serve the High Evolutionary.
    • Lord Tyger (voiced by David Sobolov) – A tiger-like Beastial and the leader of the Knights.
    • Sir Ram (voiced by Ron Halder) – A bighorn sheep-like Beastial who performs experiments. He is responsible for Git's appearance.
    • Lady Ursula (voiced by Tasha Simms) – A bear-like Beastial.
    • Lady Vermin (voiced by Jennifer Hale) – A rat-like Beastial who is strangely attracted to Spider-Man.
  • Machine Men (voiced by Dale Wilson) – Robots that work as police for the High Evolutionary and help the Knights of Wundagore.
  • Eddie Brock / Venom (voiced by Brian Drummond) – One of Spider-Man's main enemies. He and the Venom symbiote are fully merged. He tries to take over Counter-Earth with Carnage and other symbiotes.
  • Cletus Kasady / Carnage (voiced by Michael Donovan) – Another main villain. The Carnage symbiote completely controls Cletus. He works with Venom to join the Synoptic, a huge group of symbiotes on Counter-Earth.
  • The Hunter (voiced by Paul Dobson) – The Counter-Earth version of Kraven the Hunter. He is a mercenary who hunts for both the rebels and the High Evolutionary. He uses a special formula to gain animal traits, but it's very dangerous.
  • Electro (voiced by Dale Wilson) – The Counter-Earth version of Electro. He is an electric eel Beastial with electrical powers.

Other Important Characters

  • J. Jonah Jameson (voiced by Richard Newman) – John Jameson's father and the boss of the Daily Bugle newspaper. He blames Spider-Man for what happened to his son.
  • Mary Jane Watson-Parker (voiced by Jennifer Hale) – Peter Parker's wife. She knows Peter is Spider-Man and worries about him. She stays on Earth while Peter is on Counter-Earth.
  • Nick Fury (voiced by Mark Gibbon) – A government agent who tries to stop Spider-Man from going to Counter-Earth but eventually lets him go.
  • Green Goblin/Hector Jones (voiced by Rino Romano) – The Counter-Earth version of Green Goblin, but he's a hero! He first thinks Spider-Man is a villain. He later learns Spider-Man's secret and helps him. He is also Dr. Naoko's missing husband.
  • Mr. Meugniot (voiced by Garry Chalk) – The editor of the Daily Byte, a newspaper on Counter-Earth. He is named after one of the show's creators, Will Meugniot.
  • Vulture (voiced by Scott McNeil) – The Counter-Earth version of the Vulture, who is also a hero. He helps Spider-Man fight Sir Ram.

Other Adventures

Comics

A comic book series called Spider-Man Unlimited was made to go along with the TV show. The first two issues were based on the first three episodes of the cartoon. The next three issues told new stories. In the last comic, Spider-Man meets a Beastial version of Wolverine. They fight, then team up to defeat a Beastial Chameleon. It was hinted that Wolverine might be Naoko Jones' missing husband, but the comic series ended before this question was answered.

The show's universe was also mentioned in other Spider-Man comics, like "Webspinners: Tales of Spider-Man" and during the big "Spider-Verse" event.

Video Games

The cool new suit Spider-Man wears in Spider-Man Unlimited appears as an unlockable costume in the video games Spider-Man (2000) and Spider-Man 2: Enter Electro.
