Where is St. Paul Located?
St. Paul is in the southern part of Madison County. Two main roads, Highway 16 and Highway 23, run through the town. These roads help connect St. Paul to other places. For example, Highway 23 goes north to Huntsville, which is the county seat. It also goes south to Ozark. Highway 16 heads northwest to Fayetteville and east into the Boston Mountains.
The town covers about 0.45 square miles, which is mostly land. St. Paul is built along the upper part of the White River. The Ozark-St. Francis National Forest is right next to the town's southern border.
The Boston Mountains Ecoregion
St. Paul is part of a special natural area called the Upper Boston Mountains ecoregion. This area is generally higher and wetter than other parts of the Boston Mountains. The land here is between 1,900 and 2,800 feet high.
The forests in this region are mainly made up of oak–hickory forest trees. These forests are very dense and have fewer pine trees than other areas. Slopes that face north have cooler, wetter forests. The ground underneath is mostly sandstone, shale, and siltstone. This is different from the limestone and dolomite found in the wider Ozark Highlands.
The water in the streams here is usually very clean. This is because of the type of rocks, soil, and how the land is used. There are very low levels of minerals, nutrients, and dirt in the water. During the summer, some streams might dry up. In the past, cutting down trees for timber was a big job for many people in this area.
