St Alban's Church in Macclesfield, Cheshire, England, is a Roman Catholic parish church. This means it's a church that serves a local community. It's listed as a Grade II* building, which means it's a very important old building. A famous architect named A. W. N. Pugin designed it. Experts say it's one of his most interesting works.

History of St Alban's Church

The church was designed in 1838 and built from 1839 to 1841. Building it cost about £8,000, which was a lot of money back then! Some of the money came from the Earl of Shrewsbury.

Church Design and Features

Outside the Church

St Alban's Church is built with stone and has a roof made of Welsh slate. It has a tower at the west (front) end, a main hall called a nave, and smaller sections on the sides called aisles. There's also a chancel at the east end, which is where the altar is.

The church is built in a style called Perpendicular Gothic, which was popular in the 14th to 16th centuries. The tower was never fully finished. It has a fancy doorway and a large window above it. The sides of the church have many windows, letting in lots of light.

Inside the Church

Inside, the columns that hold up the arches are quite thin. There are tall, painted arches leading into the tower, chancel, and a small chapel. The tower area holds the organ and a special gallery for the choir.

The chancel has a colorful tiled floor. It also has an amazing altar piece with a statue and 12 figures of saints. Another altar is in the north aisle. The pulpit, where sermons are given, was added in 1854. Many of the beautiful carvings and stained-glass windows were designed by famous artists and architects of the time. The organ was moved here in 1885 and later rebuilt.
