The Church's Story
St Benedict's Church was built a very long time ago. Its first parts were made in the early 1100s. More changes were added to the building in the 1200s.
The church stopped being used for services in 1678. For about 250 years after that, it was used for other things. It was next to a farm and became a farm building. Imagine a church being used to store farm tools or crops!
In the early 1900s, the church was fixed up. It was repaired again later in the same century. This helped to keep the old building safe.
What the Church Looks Like
St Benedict's Church is built from a type of stone called ragstone rubble. This means it uses rough, broken pieces of stone. The roof is made of tiles.
The church has a simple design. It has two main parts:
- The nave is the main area where people would sit.
- The chancel is the part near the altar, usually at the east end.
The windows and doors in the church are round at the top. This is a common style for very old buildings. Inside, the church is quite plain. There is a gallery inside that was added in the 1800s. You can also see a cast iron candelabrum. This is a large candle holder that dates back to the late 1600s.
