St. James's Church is a special church in Glossop, Derbyshire, England. It belongs to the Church of England and follows an evangelical style of worship. Together with St. Luke's Church, it forms the Whitfield Parish in the Derby Diocese.

The churchyard is a peaceful place. It holds war graves for three soldiers from World War I. There is also a special memorial for Samuel Wood, who owned a local mill. This memorial is a Grade II listed building, meaning it is historically important.

History of St. James's Church

Building the Church

The first stone for St. James's Church was laid on 27 September 1844. The church was designed by an architect named Edwin Hugh Shellard. Building work continued for about two years.

Opening and Changes

The church was officially opened and blessed on 8 September 1846. This ceremony was performed by the Bishop of Lichfield. Later, in 1897, the chancel, which is the area around the altar, was made bigger by Naylor and Sale. Around the year 1900, a vestry was added. A vestry is a room in a church used for changing robes or storing things.

Historic Status

In the year 2000, St. James's Church was given a special status. It became a Grade II listed building. This means it is an important historical building that needs to be protected.
