St Jude's Church is a beautiful old church located on Nantwich Road in Tilstone Fearnall, Cheshire, England. It is an active Anglican church, meaning it belongs to the Church of England. This church serves as a local parish church, which is a church that looks after the spiritual needs of people in a specific area.

St Jude's is considered a special building. It is listed as a Grade II listed building on the National Heritage List for England. This means it's an important historical building that needs to be protected. You can find it across the road from a place called Tilstone Lodge.

Building a Church: Its History

St Jude's Church was built in 1836. A talented architect named George Latham, who was from Nantwich, designed it.

The church was paid for by a person called Admiral John Tollemache. An Admiral is a very high-ranking officer in the navy. He had also built Tilstone Lodge earlier.

Exploring the Church's Design

St Jude's Church is built from yellow sandstone blocks, which are called ashlar. Its roof is made of slate. The church has a simple rectangular shape.

Main Parts of the Church

The main part of the church includes the nave (where people sit) and the chancel (the area near the altar). These two parts are joined together without a wall in between.

At the east end of the chancel, there's a small room called a vestry. This is where the clergy (like priests) prepare for services.

West End Features

At the west end of the church, you'll see a bellcote on the gable. A bellcote is a small structure that holds a bell. Above it, there's a decorative cover called a canopy, which has small hook-like decorations called crockets.

The front of the church, at the west end, has a double door. Above the door, there are three tall, narrow windows, known as lancet windows. Above these, there's a round window.

Towers and Windows

At each corner of the west end, there are square towers called turrets. As they go higher, they change shape to become eight-sided. Each turret has a small spire on top.

Along each side of the church, you'll find five pairs of lancet windows. Each pair is separated by a buttress, which is a support built against the wall. At the east end, above the vestry, there's another set of three lancet windows.

Inside the Church

Inside St Jude's, there is a west gallery. This is an upper floor area, often used for seating or for the organ. The reredos, which is a decorated screen behind the altar, has figures carved into it.

You can also find a special memorial inside. It remembers Admiral Tollemache, who passed away in 1837, and his wife, who died in 1846. The church also has beautiful stained glass windows that were added in 1987.

The Church Organ

In the west gallery, there is a large organ. This organ has two manuals, which are like keyboards. It was built in 1914 by a company called Peter Conacher and Company. The same company later fixed it up in 1965.

Outside the Church

The churchyard, which is the area around the church, is a peaceful place. It contains the war graves of two soldiers who died during World War II. These graves are a reminder of their service and sacrifice.
