The Church of St Lawrence is a historic church located in Hutton Bonville, a small place in North Yorkshire, England. It used to be a private church for a large estate. Today, it is no longer used for regular church services.
This special church is now looked after by a charity called the Friends of Friendless Churches. They help save old churches that might otherwise be forgotten. The Church of St Lawrence is also listed as a Grade II listed building. This means it is an important historical building that needs to be protected.
The Church's Story
The Church of St Lawrence has parts that date back to the 1500s and 1600s. However, most of what you see today was rebuilt in 1896. This big rebuilding project was done for Sir Henry Beresford-Peirse. He owned Hutton Bonville Hall, and the church was part of his estate.
The rebuilding was so complete that almost nothing from the older church was left. Only some old walls remained. A famous expert named Nikolaus Pevsner visited the church in the early 1960s. He wrote about it in his book, Yorkshire: The North Riding. He noted that the church was "away from anywhere" except the nearby Hutton Bonville Hall.
In 1962, Hutton Bonville Hall was torn down. The church was then closed. It was officially declared a redundant church in 2007. This means it was no longer needed for regular worship. In October 2020, the church was taken over by the Friends of Friendless Churches charity. They are now working to repair and preserve this historic building.
What the Church Looks Like
The Church of St Lawrence has a main area called a nave. This part has three sections. It also has a chancel, which is the area near the altar. At the western end of the church, there is a small bell tower with a pointed roof, called a gabled bellcote.
Inside, you can find a font that is very old, dating back to the Norman times. A font is a basin used for baptisms. There is also one beautiful Victorian stained glass window still in place. Stained glass windows are made of colored glass pieces that create pictures.
An expert named Pevsner also noted that the church once had a special cup and paten made by a craftsman named Gabriel Sleath. These are items used in church services. As mentioned before, St Lawrence is a Grade II listed building. This means it is recognized for its historical and architectural importance.
