St Martin's Church is a very old Anglican church in the village of Allerton Mauleverer, North Yorkshire, England. It's considered a really important building and is protected as a Grade II* listed building. The Churches Conservation Trust looks after it today. You can find St Martin's Church just outside Allerton Park, which is part of Allerton Castle. This castle has been the home of the Mauleverer family for almost 700 years!

History of St Martin's Church

The very first church dedicated to Saint Martin was built here by a member of the Mauleverer family. This happened a long, long time ago, either in the late 1100s or early 1200s. The church you see today was rebuilt and changed in 1745 and 1746. This work was done for Richard Arundell. He was an important person who inherited the Mauleverer family's property and was a Member of Parliament for Knaresborough. St Martin's Church stopped being a regular church on 1 December 1971. It was then officially given to the Churches Conservation Trust on 27 July 1973, so they could keep it safe and preserved.

Exploring the Church's Design

Outside the Church

St Martin's Church is built from limestone, a strong stone. The front of the church is made of smooth, cut stone called ashlar. The rest of the church uses stone laid in rows. The roof is made of stone slates. The church's style is called Norman revival, which means it looks like old Norman buildings.

The church has a main area called a nave with six sections. On each side of the nave are aisles and transepts, which are like arms sticking out. It also has a chancel, which is the part where the altar is. In the middle, between the nave and chancel, there's a tall tower.

At the front of the church, there are three pointed roof sections called gables. The main entrance has a round-topped doorway. Above this door, there's a round window. On either side of this round window, you'll see more windows with round tops. The sides of the church have four round-topped windows. The windows in the transepts have two parts. The window at the very back of the church has five parts and is in a style called Perpendicular.

The central tower has three levels. The top level has two round-topped openings on each side for bells. The tower has a pyramid-shaped roof with a weather vane on top.

Inside the Church

When you go inside St Martin's Church, you'll see a special font shaped like a vase. There's also a two-level pulpit where sermons were given, with a sounding board above it to help the sound carry. The church has panelled box pews, which are like private seating areas.

You'll notice iron gates between the nave and the chancel, and also between the nave and the transepts. The roof inside is a hammerbeam roof, which is a very old and strong way to build a roof. On the arch leading to the chancel, there's a painting of Moses and Aaron.

In the north transept, there are four old statues called effigies. Two of these are made of wood and show knights with crossed legs. They are from the late 1200s or early 1300s. The other two statues are made of alabaster (a soft stone) and are from 1475. They show Sir John Mauleverer and his wife. In the south transept, there's a large tomb for Mrs Mary Thornton, who passed away in 1800.
