St Mellion (which is called Sen Melyan in the Cornish language) is a small village and a rural area in eastern Cornwall, England. It's about 3 miles (5 km) south of Callington.

Nearby areas include Callington and St Dominick to the north. Pillaton is to the east and south, and St Ive is to the west. In 2011, about 383 people lived there, a small increase from 377 people in 2001. The village gets its name from St Melaine, who was a bishop in France way back in the 500s.

St Melanus' Church

The main church in St Mellion is called St Melanus' Church. It is part of the Church of England. The older part of the church, on the south side, was built in the 1300s. The north side was added later, in the late 1400s, and is made of granite.

Inside the church, you can find several monuments. These are dedicated to the Coryton family, who were important people in the area. One monument is a brass plaque from 1552 showing Peter Coryton, his wife, and their 24 children. There are also two fancy stone sculptures for William Coryton (from 1651) and Sir William Coryton (from 1711).

Pentillie Castle and Estate

St Mellion is also home to Pentillie, a large estate with a castle. The castle was built in the 1600s. The Coryton family has owned Pentillie since 1698. Before that, they lived at another estate called West Newton Ferrers, also in St Mellion.

The area of Newton Ferrers was mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086. This was a very old survey of England ordered by William the Conqueror.

The current house at Pentillie was built between 1686 and 1695. It's a simple granite mansion with two floors. The middle part has seven sections, and there are two parts that stick out, each with two sections. It was one of the first large houses in Cornwall built in the classical style, which means it looked more like ancient Roman or Greek buildings.

Sadly, two-thirds of the house were badly damaged by a fire in 1940. Some parts have been rebuilt, but other parts remain as ruins.

Other Interesting Places

The St Mellion golf course is also located in the parish. It is a well-known place for playing golf.

Another important site is Crocadon Quarry. This quarry is about 200 metres east of St Mellion village. It is a Site of Special Scientific Interest because of its unique geology. This means it has special rocks and landforms that scientists want to protect and study.
