Stanislav Sergeyevich Govorukhin (Russian: Станислав Сергеевич Говорухин; born March 29, 1936 – died June 14, 2018) was a famous Soviet and Russian filmmaker, actor, and politician. He was known for directing many popular movies. In 2006, he received the title of People's Artist of Russia. His films often told exciting detective or adventure stories.

Who Was Stanislav Govorukhin?
His Early Life
Stanislav Govorukhin was born in Berezniki, a city in Russia. His parents separated before he was born. His father, Sergei Govorukhin, was from a group called the Don Cossacks. He was arrested and sent away, where he died around 1938. Stanislav's mother, Praskovya Glazkova, was a tailor. She came from a simple family in the Volga region. She raised Stanislav and his sister Inessa by herself.
Becoming a Filmmaker
Stanislav started his career working as a geologist in 1958. Later, he joined a television studio in Kazan. He then went to study filmmaking at the VGIK, a famous film school.
Most of his early movies were made at the Odessa Film Studio. He was good friends with the famous singer and actor Vladimir Vysotsky. Stanislav directed three movies that starred Vysotsky: Vertical (1967), White Explosion (1969), and The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed (1979). The Meeting Place Cannot Be Changed became a very popular film in the Soviet Union. Many of his other films also used Vysotsky's songs.
Besides directing, Stanislav also wrote movie scripts. He wrote the script for Pirates of the 20th Century (1979), which was a very successful action film. He also acted in many movies himself. Stanislav was a trained mountaineer. This meant he could do his own stunts in films. He even made movies about mountaineering, like Vertical and White Explosion.
His Political Role
During a time of big changes in Russia called perestroika, Stanislav became more involved in politics. He was one of the leaders of the Democratic Party of Russia. In 1990, he directed a documentary film called We Can't Live Like This. This film was very critical of Soviet society. It won him an important award called the Nika Award for Best Director.
Stanislav Govorukhin was a member of the State Duma, which is like the Russian parliament, starting in 1993. He led the Duma's culture committee for some time. He also ran for president in the 2000 Russian presidential election. In 2011–2012, he worked for Vladimir Putin's election campaign. He was a member of the United Russia party. In 2014, he signed a letter supporting Russia's actions in Crimea.
Beyond Films
In the early 2000s, Stanislav returned to filmmaking. He acted in a detective TV series called Female Logic. He also directed the movie Voroshilov Sharpshooter. He directed seven more movies after that. In his later years, he also worked as a producer, helping to make films happen.
Stanislav Govorukhin was married twice. His son from his first marriage, Sergey Govorukhin (1961–2011), was a war correspondent and filmmaker. Sergey made documentaries about different conflicts. He won a Nika Award for his documentary Damned and Forgotten in 1998. Sergey passed away in 2011.
In the 1990s, Stanislav Govorukhin became interested in landscape painting. He had several art shows starting in 1998. He was also a member of the Russian Orthodox Church. In 2016, on his 80th birthday, he received an award from the head of the Russian Orthodox Church.
Stanislav Govorukhin passed away on June 14, 2018, at the age of 82, after a long illness. He was buried in Moscow.
