Stanmore is a small community called a hamlet. It is found in Special Area No. 2 in the province of Alberta, Canada. The hamlet is right next to Alberta Highway 9. This highway follows the old path of the Canadian National Railway line.
People believe Stanmore was named after a place in Stanmore, England.
History of Stanmore
Stanmore used to be a much bigger place than it is today. At its busiest, it had a school for children and large buildings called grain elevators. These elevators were used to store crops like wheat.
There was also a post office in Stanmore. It opened in 1913 and served the community for many years. The post office eventually closed its doors in 1970. A local government area, a municipal district, was also named after the hamlet. It was called Stanmore No. 454.
Health Event in 1937
In 1937, Stanmore was the site of a rare health event. An illness affected some animals in the area. It caused the death of 22 minks that were being raised on a farm. One person who worked with the minks also became sick and passed away. The animals had caught the illness from wild prairie dogs.
Economy and Development
Since the 1950s, people have found Natural gas around Stanmore. This discovery has been a big boost for the area's economy. Natural gas is an important energy source.
Today, finding and using natural gas is one of the main ways Stanmore and its surrounding area make money. Farming and ranching are also very important. These activities help the community grow and thrive.
