History of Stanton City
Stanton was started in 1860. At that time, people in Montcalm County decided to move their main government office, the county seat, to this new place. Before this, the county seat was in Greenville since 1840.
The County Board bought 40 acres (about 160,000 square meters) of land from Fred Hall. They named the new place "Fred" to honor him. The first family to live here was Levi Camburn's family. Levi Camburn also became the first postmaster on March 10, 1862.
In 1863, the city was renamed Stanton. This new name honored Edwin M. Stanton, who was the U.S. Secretary of War at the time. Stanton was officially mapped out in 1865. It became a village in 1869 and then a city in 1881. The Hotel Montcalm, a well-known building, was built in 1863.
