Sidney Township is a special kind of local government area called a civil township in Montcalm County, Michigan. It's located in the United States. In 2020, about 2,538 people lived here.

Geography of Sidney Township

Sidney Township is in the southwestern part of Montcalm County. The city of Stanton, which is the main city of the county, is just northeast of the township. A small part of the village of Sheridan is also in the southeast corner of the township.

Roads and Rivers

State highway M-66 runs along the eastern edge of the township. This road connects Stanton and Sheridan.

The township has a total area of 35.0 square miles (91 km2). Most of this area, 33.9 square miles (88 km2), is land. The rest, 1.1 square miles (2.8 km2), is water, like rivers and streams.

Water flows through Sidney Township in different directions. In the western and southern parts, water from Dickerson Creek flows into the Flat River. This river then joins the Grand River. In the northern and eastern parts, water flows into Fish Creek. Fish Creek then goes into the Maple River, which also joins the Grand River.

Sidney Community

Sidney is a small, unincorporated community right in the middle of the township. An unincorporated community means it's a recognized place but doesn't have its own local government like a city or village. You can find it at the crossing of Derby and Sidney roads 43°15′00″N 85°07′59″W / 43.25000°N 85.13306°W / 43.25000; -85.13306 (Sidney).

The first person to settle here permanently was Phineas Swift in 1854. A post office opened in 1862, with Joshua V. Noah as the first postmaster. The community and the township were named after Sidney, Ohio, where some of the first settlers came from. The Sidney post office uses the ZIP code 48885. It serves the central part of the township and some areas to the west.

Sheridan Village

The village of Sheridan is located at the southeast corner of Sidney Township. Some of its land is actually inside the township. The Sheridan post office has the ZIP code 48884. It serves the southern part of Sidney Township.

Stanton City

The city of Stanton is at the northeast corner of the township. Some land that used to be part of the township is now part of Stanton. The Stanton post office uses the ZIP code 48888. It serves the northern part of Sidney Township.
