Stefan Ilsanker (born May 18, 1989) is a former professional football player from Austria. He played as a defensive midfielder, a position where he helped protect his team's goal.
Stefan started his football journey at the Red Bull Salzburg academy. His professional career lasted 15 years. During this time, he played for several well-known clubs like SV Mattersburg, RB Leipzig, Eintracht Frankfurt, and Genoa. He also proudly represented his home country, Austria, in international matches.
Club Career
Stefan Ilsanker began playing football as a young boy at 1. Halleiner SK. He started as a goalkeeper but soon found his true calling in the midfield. In 2005, he joined Red Bull Salzburg and played for their junior team, known as Red Bull Juniors.
On April 4, 2009, Stefan was first included in the main team for a league game. His very first match for Red Bull Salzburg was a national cup game on August 15, 2009. He even played his first international game for the club in a UEFA Champions League qualifier on August 25, 2009.
After the 2009–10 season, Stefan moved to SV Mattersburg. He played there for two years before returning to Red Bull Salzburg in 2012. This time, he became a regular player in the starting team. In February, his contract was extended until 2018, showing how important he was to the club.
On January 31, 2020, Stefan joined Eintracht Frankfurt. He signed a contract that lasted until 2022. A few months later, on June 3, 2020, he came on as a substitute against Werder Bremen. He scored two goals in the last 10 minutes, helping his team win 3–0.
On June 23, 2022, Stefan moved to Italy to play for Genoa. He played there for one season. After being without a club for six months, Stefan announced on January 6, 2024, that he was retiring from professional football.
International Career
Stefan Ilsanker played many times for the Austrian national team. He earned over 40 caps (appearances) for his country since his first game in 2014.
He represented Austria at the Euro 2016 tournament. Austria finished last in their group, Group F. Stefan played in two matches during the tournament. These included a 0–0 draw against the team that eventually won the championship, Portugal, and a 2–1 loss to Iceland.
Personal Life
Stefan Ilsanker comes from a football family. His father, Herbert Ilsanker, is a goalkeeper coach for Red Bull Salzburg.
