Stepney, also known as Stepney Village or Upper Stepney, is a special part of the town of Monroe, Connecticut. It is even listed on the Connecticut State Register of Historic Places!

Stepney is about 8 square miles big. It stretches from the town of Trumbull, along Route 25, all the way to the town of Newtown. Before 2020, it was officially called a "census-designated place." This just means it's a special area for counting people.

People first settled here around 1720. Stepney started as a busy farming area. Many of its first residents came from towns like Fairfield and Stratford.

In the early 1800s, Stepney became a major travel spot. It was a hub for people going to and from Danbury and the Greater Bridgeport areas. Travelers used the Bridgeport and Newtown Turnpike, which was the first paved road in Monroe. They also used Hattertown Road.

Stepney was once a train stop for the Housatonic Railroad. It was also home to Monroe's very first fire department, the Stepney Volunteer Fire Department.

Today, Stepney is mostly a suburban community. It has over a dozen historic buildings that are more than 100 years old. Most of its businesses are located along Route 25.
