Steven Douglas Brown, born on March 20, 1960, is a former American football player and coach. He played his entire professional career with the Houston Oilers in the National Football League (NFL). This was from 1983 to 1990.

Brown played college football for the Oregon Ducks. After his playing career, he became a coach. He served as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Michigan Panthers. This team is part of the United Football League (UFL).

Early Life and High School

Steven Brown was born and grew up in Sacramento, California. He finished high school at C. K. McClatchy High School in 1978.

College Football Career

Brown played as a defensive back and kick returner for the University of Oregon Ducks football team. He played for four seasons, from 1979 to 1982. His coach during this time was Rich Brooks.

In 1983, Brown earned a degree in English literature. He was also a member of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity. During his college career, Brown returned 78 kickoffs for a total of 1,868 yards. He even scored one touchdown from a kickoff return. He also returned 18 punts for 185 yards and one touchdown. As a defensive player, he made 8 interceptions, returning them for 139 yards and one touchdown.

Professional Playing Career

From 1983 to 1990, Steve Brown played as a left cornerback for the Houston Oilers. During his time with the Oilers, he had 18 interceptions. He returned these interceptions for a total of 264 yards and scored one touchdown. Brown also recorded 5 sacks.

He also worked as a kick returner from 1983 to 1985. In this role, he had 36 returns for 857 yards and scored one touchdown.

Coaching Career Highlights

After his playing days, Steve Brown became a successful football coach. He coached for several teams in both the NFL and college football.

Coaching with the St. Louis Rams

In 1995, Brown joined his former college coach, Rich Brooks, at the St. Louis Rams. He started as a defensive assistant coach. In 1996, he became the coach for the cornerbacks. He continued in this role in 1997 under new coach Dick Vermeil.

From 1998 to 2000, Brown coached the entire defensive backs group for the Rams. This included the amazing 1999 season when the Rams won Super Bowl XXXIV. He coached under Mike Martz in the 2000 season. Some of the famous players he coached there include Dre' Bly, Kevin Carter, London Fletcher, and Todd Lyght.

Coaching at the University of Kentucky

In 2003, Brown joined Rich Brooks's coaching staff again, this time at the University of Kentucky. He was the defensive backs coach until 2006. In 2007, he was promoted to defensive coordinator.

He stayed as defensive coordinator for Joker Phillips's team in 2010. In 2011, he became the co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach. During his time at Kentucky, the teams won three bowl games in a row: the 2006 Music City Bowl, 2007 Music City Bowl, and 2009 Liberty Bowl.

Coaching with the Tennessee Titans

In 2012, Brown moved to the Tennessee Titans to join Mike Munchak's staff. He worked as an assistant secondary coach. He kept this position when Ken Whisenhunt became the new coach in 2014. Brown left the Tennessee Titans after the 2015 season.

Coaching at East Tennessee State

Brown returned to coaching in 2018. He took on the role of defensive backs coach at ETSU.

Coaching with the Michigan Panthers

On February 7, 2023, Steve Brown was hired as the defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach for the Michigan Panthers. This team is part of the United States Football League (USFL). On January 29, 2024, it was announced that Collin Bauer became the new defensive coordinator for the team.

Personal Life

Steve Brown is the younger brother of actress Olivia Brown. She was a co-star in the popular 1980s TV show, Miami Vice.
