Steven Donald Larmer (born June 16, 1961) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. He was a talented forward who played for the Chicago Blackhawks and New York Rangers in the NHL. Steve is also the brother of another hockey player, Jeff Larmer.

Early Hockey Days

When Steve was a kid, he played minor ice hockey in Peterborough, Ontario. He even played in the famous Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament in 1974. This tournament is a big deal for young hockey players!

A Star in the NHL

Steve Larmer became known as one of the best "power forwards" in the NHL. A power forward is a player who is strong and skilled. They can score goals and also play tough defense.

Amazing Rookie Season

In 1983, Steve won the Calder Memorial Trophy. This award goes to the best rookie (first-year player) in the NHL. He was also named to the NHL All-Rookie Team that year. This shows how quickly he became a top player!

Playing Streak and Trade

From 1982 to 1993, Steve played in 884 games in a row for the Blackhawks. This is an amazing record for playing so many games without missing one! It was the longest streak ever for a player with the same team.

His streak ended because of a contract problem. After that, he was traded to the New York Rangers.

Winning the Stanley Cup

In 1994, Steve helped the New York Rangers win the Stanley Cup. This is the biggest championship in hockey! He was an alternate captain for the team and scored four goals in the Stanley Cup Finals.

All-Star and Top Player

Steve was chosen to play in the NHL All-Star Game twice. He played in the 1990 game and again in the 1991 game in Chicago. In the 1990–91 season, he was one of the top five players voted for the league's Most Valuable Player (MVP) award.

He was also a great defensive player. He often received votes for the Frank J. Selke Trophy, which is given to the best defensive forward. He also got votes for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy, which is for sportsmanship and skill.

Career Milestones

In his final season (1994–95), Steve reached two big milestones:

  • He scored his 1,000th point.
  • He played in his 1,000th game.

He finished his NHL career with 1,006 games played, 441 goals, and 571 assists, for a total of 1,012 points.

Playing for Canada

Steve also played for Team Canada. In 1991, he was part of the team that won the gold medal at the 1991 Canada Cup. He played on the top line with hockey legend Wayne Gretzky. Steve led the whole tournament in goals with 6 and was second in points with 11, right behind Gretzky! He also won a silver medal at the World Championships in 1991.
