Steve Larmer's Hockey Journey

Early Days on the Ice

When Steve was a kid, he loved hockey! In 1974, he played in a big tournament called the Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament. His minor ice hockey team was from Peterborough, Ontario.

Playing in the NHL

Steve Larmer became a professional player in the National Hockey League (NHL). He played for two famous teams: the Chicago Blackhawks and the New York Rangers. People knew him as one of the best 'power forwards' of his time. A power forward is a player who is strong and good at scoring goals.

In 1983, Steve won the Calder Memorial Trophy. This award goes to the best rookie (first-year player) in the NHL. He was also named to the NHL All-Rookie Team that year.

Amazing Streak and Stanley Cup Win

From 1982 to 1993, Larmer played in 884 games in a row for the Blackhawks! This was an NHL record for playing so many games with the same team. It was also the third-longest streak in the league's history at that time.

His amazing streak ended because of a contract problem in 1993. After that, he was traded to the New York Rangers. That same year, the Rangers went on to win the Stanley Cup, which is the biggest prize in hockey! Steve was an alternate captain for the Rangers and scored four goals in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Steve was chosen to play in the NHL All-Star Game twice. He played in the 1990 All-Star Game in Pittsburgh. He also played in the 1991 All-Star Game in Chicago. In the 1990–91 season, he was one of the top players in the league.

Larmer was great at both offense and defense. He often received votes for the Frank J. Selke Trophy. This award is given to the best defensive forward in the league. He also received votes for the Lady Byng Memorial Trophy. This award is for players who show good sportsmanship and skill.

In his final season, 1994–95, Steve reached two big milestones. He scored his 1,000th point and played in his 1,000th game.

Playing for Team Canada

Steve Larmer also played for Team Canada. He was part of the 1991 Canada Cup team. He played on the top line with the legendary Wayne Gretzky. Larmer led the whole tournament in goals with 6. He was also second in points with 11, right behind Gretzky.
