Steven Rashad Jackson (born July 22, 1983) is a former professional football player. He was a running back in the National Football League (NFL) for 12 seasons. He spent most of his career with the St. Louis Rams.
Steven played college football for the Oregon State Beavers. The Rams picked him in the first round of the 2004 NFL draft. After nine seasons with the Rams, he played for the Atlanta Falcons (2013–2014) and the New England Patriots (2015). Steven was chosen for three Pro Bowls and two All-Pro teams. He is the Rams' all-time leading rusher, meaning he gained more running yards than any other player in their history.

Steven Jackson's Early Life
Steven Jackson was born in Las Vegas, Nevada. He played running back for Eldorado High School. During his high school career, he ran for an amazing 6,396 yards and scored 81 touchdowns. His team, the Sundevils, made it to the state final in his senior year.
Steven also played track and field for four years. His success in high school football helped college teams notice more players from the Las Vegas area. In 2011, Steven was honored by being added to the Southern Nevada Sports Hall of Fame.
College Football Career
Steven Jackson went to Oregon State University. He played for the Beavers for three seasons, from 2001 to 2003. In 36 games, he ran the ball 743 times for 3,625 yards. He also scored 39 touchdowns by running. Steven caught 66 passes for 680 yards and six touchdowns. He also returned seven kickoffs for 240 yards and one touchdown.
His total of 4,545 all-purpose yards is the second-highest in Oregon State history. He also ranks third in school history for total points scored with 276. In his second year, Steven led the Pac-10 Conference in rushing yards. He gained 1,690 yards, averaging 130 yards per game. In his third year, he ran for 1,545 yards and 19 touchdowns. He also caught 44 passes for 470 yards and three touchdowns.

Steven Jackson's NFL Career
Steven Jackson was picked by the St. Louis Rams in the first round of the 2004 NFL draft. He was the 24th player chosen overall. He was also the first running back picked that year.
Playing for the St. Louis Rams
On July 30, 2004, Steven signed a five-year contract with the Rams. In his first year, 2004, he was a backup player behind Marshall Faulk. He played his first NFL game against the Arizona Cardinals. He ran for 50 yards in that game. Steven scored his first professional touchdown in Week 4 against the San Francisco 49ers. Later in the season, he started to play more. In Week 13, he ran for 119 yards, his first game with over 100 yards. He finished his rookie year with 673 rushing yards and four touchdowns.
Becoming a Starter in 2005
In 2005, Steven became the Rams' main running back. In Week 4, he scored his first receiving touchdown. In Week 7, he scored two rushing touchdowns in one game. In Week 8, he had a great game with 179 rushing yards. For the season, he ran for 1,046 yards and eight touchdowns. He also caught 43 passes for 320 yards and two receiving touchdowns.
Breakout Season in 2006
The 2006 season was a huge year for Steven Jackson. He started strong with 121 rushing yards in the first game. He scored a rushing touchdown in four straight games. In Week 16, he had an amazing game against the Washington Redskins. He ran for 150 yards, scored a rushing touchdown, caught nine passes for 102 yards, and scored a receiving touchdown. He was named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for this game.
He ended the season with 1,528 rushing yards and 13 rushing touchdowns. He also caught 90 passes for 806 yards and three receiving touchdowns. Steven led the NFL in total yards from scrimmage with 2,334. Because of his great performance, he was chosen for his first Pro Bowl.
2007 and 2008 Seasons
In 2007, Steven ran for 1,002 yards and five touchdowns. He also had 38 catches for 271 yards. Before the 2008 season, Steven signed a new contract. This deal made him one of the highest-paid running backs in the NFL at the time. In Week 7 against the Dallas Cowboys, he ran for 160 yards and scored three rushing touchdowns. He finished the 2008 season with 1,042 rushing yards and seven touchdowns.
2009 and 2010 Seasons
In 2009, Steven had another strong year, rushing for 1,416 yards. He was chosen for his second Pro Bowl. In 2010, he continued to play well. He ran for over 100 yards in three games in a row. During the game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Steven passed Eric Dickerson to become the Rams' all-time leading rusher. This means he had gained more rushing yards than any other player in Rams history. He finished the 2010 season with 1,241 rushing yards. He earned his third Pro Bowl nomination.
2011 and 2012 Seasons
In 2011, Steven rushed for 1,145 yards and five touchdowns. He also caught 42 passes for 333 yards. In 2012, the Rams drafted two new running backs. Steven continued to be a strong player. In Week 15, he reached a big milestone. He became the 27th running back in NFL history to rush for over 10,000 yards. He also became the sixth running back to have eight straight seasons with over 1,000 rushing yards. After the 2012 season, Steven decided to leave the Rams to try and play for a team that was closer to winning a championship.
Playing for the Atlanta Falcons
On March 14, 2013, Steven Jackson signed a three-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons. In 2013, he ran for 543 yards. This was the first time since his rookie year that he didn't reach 1,000 rushing yards. He did have two games where he scored two rushing touchdowns. In 2014, his rushing yards improved to 707 yards in 15 games. The Falcons released him in February 2015.
Playing for the New England Patriots
On December 21, 2015, Steven signed with the New England Patriots. He scored his first touchdown with the Patriots on January 3. He also scored his first career playoff touchdown in the AFC Championship game. This game was his last professional football game.
Retirement
On July 29, 2019, Steven Jackson officially retired from the NFL. He signed a special one-day contract with the Los Angeles Rams (the team that used to be the St. Louis Rams) to retire as a member of their team. In 2024, Steven was inducted into the St. Louis Sports Hall of Fame.
