Exploring Historic Buildings in Stevensville

The Cray House: A Unique Old Home

The Cray House

The Cray House is a very old building on Cockey Lane. It shows a special way of building called "post-and-plank" construction. This means the walls were made by fitting horizontal wooden planks into slots cut into vertical posts. It is one of the best examples of this building style.

John Denny, a ship carpenter, bought the land in 1809. He likely used this unique method to build the house. Later, in 1914, Nora Cray bought the house. She lived there with her three children. In 1976, her family gave the house to the Kent Island Heritage Society. The house was carefully fixed up in 2004. It is even older than the town of Stevensville itself! It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Christ Church (1880): A Long History

The Christ Episcopal Church building on East Main Street was built in 1880. It is the fifth church for the Christ Church parish. This church group started way back in 1631. It is the oldest continuous Episcopal church group in the United States.

Earlier church buildings were in Broad Creek, one of Maryland's first towns. This 1880 church building is a great example of the Queen Anne style of church architecture. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, the county owns the building. As of 2008, a Lutheran church group uses it, and it is being restored.

Stevensville Bank: A Glimpse into the Past

The Stevensville Bank building was constructed between 1903 and 1907. It opened for business in 1909. This bank was the start of what is now a Bank of America branch in Stevensville.

The original bank building is in the historic district on Love Point Road. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building has classic architectural details. It also has a pressed tin ceiling and original furniture and a vault. The bank moved to a new location in the 1960s. Since then, the building has been used for offices and shops. The Kent Island Heritage Society currently rents the property.

The old Stevensville post office is located at 408 Love Point Road. We do not know exactly when it was built. However, it appears on a map of Stevensville from 1877.

This post office was visited by Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was a United States President. He stopped by during his visit to Stevensville. The Kent Island Heritage Society took ownership of this historic building in 1997.

In 1894, Maryland lawmakers allowed the Queen Anne's Railroad Company to build a railroad. This railroad would connect Queenstown with Lewes, Delaware. The train line was extended to Love Point in 1902. That is when the Stevensville Train Depot was built.

When Maryland's Bay Bridge was built in 1952, the railroad line was no longer used. The old building was given to the Kent Island Heritage Society a few years later. The train depot was fixed up and moved to its current spot on Cockey Lane in 1988.

The Cockey House was built around 1870. Charles B. Downes first owned it. A map from 1877 shows it was used as a parsonage for the First Methodist Protestant Church. A parsonage is a house for a church leader.

Later, Miss Mary Cockey and her father, James Cockey, bought the house. Mary Cockey was an elementary school teacher. Her father was the assistant postmaster in Stevensville. Miss Mary Cockey used the house as the local library for many years. She also added a part to the house and made the front porch bigger. The current owners are working to restore the house to its original beauty.
