Explore Historic Buildings

The Stevensville Historic District is home to many interesting old buildings. Each one tells a part of the town's story. Let's explore some of the most famous ones.

The Cray House: A Unique Home

The Cray House

The Cray House is on Cockey Lane. It is a very special building because of how it was built. It shows a rare way of building called "post-and-plank" construction. This method uses strong vertical posts with horizontal planks fitted into them.

John Denny, a ship carpenter, bought the land in 1809. He likely used his shipbuilding skills to build the house. Later, in 1914, Nora Cray bought the house. She lived there with her three children. In 1976, her family gave the house to the Kent Island Heritage Society. The society carefully restored it in 2004. This house is even older than the town of Stevensville itself! It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Christ Church: A Long History

The Christ Episcopal Church of Kent Island is on East Main Street. The building you see today was built in 1880. It is the fifth church for this parish, which started way back in 1631. This makes it the oldest continuous Episcopal church group in the United States.

Earlier church buildings were in Broad Creek, another old Maryland town. The 1880 church is a great example of the Queen Anne style of architecture. This building is also individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The county now owns the church. A Lutheran church group has used it, and it has undergone restoration work.

Stevensville Bank: A Classic Building

The Stevensville Bank building was constructed between 1903 and 1907. It first opened for business in 1909. This bank was the start of what is now a Bank of America branch in Stevensville.

The original bank building is on Love Point Road. It is also listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The building has beautiful classical details. Inside, you can see a pressed tin ceiling, old furniture, and the original vault. After the bank moved in the 1960s, other businesses used the building. Today, the Kent Island Heritage Society uses the property.

Old Stevensville Post Office

Stevensville Post Office

You can find the old Stevensville post office at 408 Love Point Road. We don't know the exact year it was built. However, it appears on a map of Stevensville from 1877. This means it is a very old building.

A famous visitor to this post office was Franklin D. Roosevelt. He was a President of the United States. The Kent Island Heritage Society bought this historic property in 1997.

Stevensville Train Depot: A Railroad Past

In 1894, Maryland approved a plan for the Queen Anne's Railroad Company. They wanted to build a railroad connecting Queenstown, Maryland to Lewes, Delaware. In 1902, the line was extended to Love Point. That's when the Stevensville Train Depot was built.

When Maryland's Chesapeake Bay Bridge was built in 1952, the train line was no longer used. The old depot building was later given to the Kent Island Heritage Society. In 1988, the building was restored and moved to its current spot on Cockey Lane.

The Cockey House: A Teacher's Home

The Cockey House was built around 1870. Charles B. Downes was its first owner. An 1877 map shows it as the parsonage for the First Methodist Protestant Church. A parsonage is a home for a church's minister.

Later, in the early 1900s, Miss Mary Cockey and her father bought the house. Mary Cockey was an elementary school teacher. Her father, James Cockey, was the assistant postmaster in Stevensville. Mary Cockey used the house as the local library for many years. She also added to the house and made the front porch bigger. The current owners are working to restore this historic home.
