Stillwater is a small town, also called a borough, located in Columbia County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is part of Northeastern Pennsylvania. In 2020, about 200 people lived there. Stillwater is also part of the Bloomsburg-Berwick micropolitan area, which is a group of smaller towns and cities connected by their economies.

History of Stillwater

Stillwater began to grow when the first store opened in 1847. It was started by Daniel and James McHenry. Later, in 1899, Stillwater officially became its own borough. Before that, it was part of Fishing Creek Township.

In the past, Stillwater did not have many big industries. Most of the businesses were related to lumber (wood). A famous landmark in the town is the Stillwater Covered Bridge No. 134. This historic bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. This means it is a special place worth protecting.

Stillwater is located in the northeastern part of Columbia County. You can find it at these coordinates: 41°9′1″N 76°22′0″W / 41.15028°N 76.36667°W / 41.15028; -76.36667. The borough covers an area of about 8.2 square kilometers (3.2 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part (about 0.1 square kilometers or 0.04 square miles) being water.

Stillwater is about 13 miles (21 km) northeast of Bloomsburg. Bloomsburg is the main town, or county seat, of Columbia County. You can get to Stillwater from Bloomsburg by taking Pennsylvania Route 487. This road also goes north from Stillwater for about 3.5 miles (5.6 km) to Benton.

Fishing Creek flows through Stillwater. This creek is a smaller river that eventually joins the Susquehanna River. The center of Stillwater is mostly flat. However, if you go to the east or west, you will find gentle, rolling hills.
