The Stillwater Range is a group of mountains in western Nevada, United States. It stretches about 70 miles (113 km) long. These mountains run from the southwest to the northeast. They go through the middle of Churchill County and a bit into Pershing County.

The Stillwater Range acts like a natural wall. It separates the Carson Sink to the west from Dixie Valley to the east. To the north, a low pass connects it to the East Range. To the south, Sand Springs Pass connects it to the Sand Springs Range. At the southern end of the range is Sand Mountain. This is a huge sand dune, about 600 feet (183 meters) tall. Many people who love off-road vehicles come here from Nevada and California.

Exploring the Stillwater Range

The Stillwater Range is a great place to explore. You can find several small mines hidden in the mountain cliffs. Some of these mines might not even be on maps. Water flowing down from the mountains helps water fields of alfalfa, a plant used to feed animals.

The Steam Tractor Trail

A special spot in the Stillwater Range is the Steam Tractor Trail. This trail starts on the eastern side of the mountains. At the very top of the trail, you can find an old steam tractor. It was left there a long time ago when the road was first built. It's a cool piece of history!

Earthquakes in the Stillwater Range

In 1954, a series of strong earthquakes happened near the Stillwater Range. These earthquakes measured between 6.6 and 7.1 on the Richter scale. They occurred between July and December of that year.

Since not many people lived in the area back then (and still don't), no one died. There was also very little damage to buildings. You can still see long cracks in the ground on the eastern side of the range from these earthquakes. These cracks show where the earth's surface broke apart.

Tallest Peaks of the Stillwater Range

The Stillwater Range has several important peaks. These are the highest points in the mountains.

  • Table Mountain is about 8,330 feet (2,539 meters) tall.
  • Mount Lincoln reaches about 8,450 feet (2,576 meters) high.
  • Job Peak is the tallest peak in the range. It stands at about 8,727 feet (2,660 meters) tall.
