History of Stockbridge
The area where Stockbridge is today was once home to the "Stockbridge Indians." These Native Americans had moved there in the late 1700s. They were told this land would be kept for their future generations.
The Stockbridge people were from tribes in New York. They had settled in a "prayer town" called Stockbridge, Massachusetts. Later, they accepted an invitation from the Oneidas to live on their reservation in New York.
Over time, disagreements with White settlers caused many Stockbridge Indians to move again. They went to Indiana and then to Wisconsin. There, they became known as the Stockbridge Munsee Band of Mohican Indians.
Stockbridge is also famous as the birthplace of Philip Danforth Armour. He was a very important person in the meatpacking industry. His brother, Herman Ossian Armour, was also born here.
The first settlers from New England arrived in Stockbridge in 1791. The town itself was officially created in 1836. It was formed by combining parts of four other towns: Augusta, Lenox, Smithfield, and Vernon.
