The Stonycreek River is a river in southwestern Pennsylvania, United States. It is about 45 miles (72 kilometers) long. A river like the Stonycreek that flows into a larger river is called a tributary. The Stonycreek River flows into the Conemaugh River.

Where the Stonycreek River Flows

The Stonycreek River starts in the mountains of eastern Somerset County. It begins from a spring called Pius Spring, near Berlin. A spring where a river starts is called a headwater spring.

From there, the river flows north. It passes by several towns. These towns include Shanksville, Stoystown, Hooversville, and Ferndale.

The Stonycreek River then meets another river. It joins the Little Conemaugh River in Johnstown. When these two rivers meet, they form the Conemaugh River. The Stonycreek River has also been known by other names, like Achsinne-hanne.

The River's Health and Recovery

The area around the Stonycreek River is very beautiful. However, for a long time, the river was not healthy. This was mainly because of something called acid mine drainage. This pollution came from many years of coal mining in the area.

Acid mine drainage happens when water flows through old mines. It picks up harmful chemicals. These chemicals then flow into rivers and streams. This makes the water unsafe for plants and animals.

Many groups have been working to clean up the river. These include government agencies and private organizations. Their efforts have helped the river get much healthier. Today, the Stonycreek River is a popular spot for trout fishing.

Fun Activities on the Stonycreek River

The Stonycreek River offers exciting ways to have fun. One popular activity is whitewater rafting. This is when people ride down the river in a raft. The river's fast-moving water creates thrilling rapids.

Whitewater Rafting Releases

Whitewater rafting on the Stonycreek River is made possible by special water releases. Water is let out from the Quemahoning Reservoir. This reservoir is like a large lake that stores water.

The water releases help make the river's flow stronger. This creates better conditions for rafting. There have been plans to increase these water releases. More water means even more opportunities for exciting whitewater rafting trips.
