Water Flow Around the Mountain

Mountains like Stoppel Point play a big role in how water moves across the land. Water from Stoppel Point flows in different directions:

  • To the east, water drains into an area called Winter Clove.
  • To the north, water flows into two streams: Countryman Kill and East Kill.
  • The eastern side of the mountain is also where the Kaaterskill Creek begins. This creek is famous for its waterfalls, like Kaaterskill Falls.

What is a Mountain?

A mountain is a large natural rise of the Earth's surface. It is usually much higher and steeper than a hill. Mountains are formed by powerful forces deep within the Earth. These forces push the Earth's crust upwards. Over millions of years, wind, water, and ice also shape mountains.

How Mountains Form

Mountains are often created when two of the Earth's large plates, called tectonic plates, push against each other. This slow, powerful collision can cause the land to fold and rise. Volcanoes can also form mountains when molten rock erupts and builds up over time.

Exploring the Catskill Mountains

Stoppel Point is just one of many peaks in the Catskill Mountains. The Catskills are a large area of mountains in southeastern New York. They are part of the larger Appalachian Mountains chain. The Catskills are a popular place for:

  • Hiking and walking on trails
  • Camping in nature

Many people visit the Catskills to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful forests. The area changes colors wonderfully in the autumn.
