Early Life and School Days
Storm Thorgerson was born in Potters Bar, England. His family had roots in Norway. He went to school with some of the future members of Pink Floyd, including Syd Barrett and Roger Waters. They even played rugby together!
Later, Storm studied English and Philosophy at the University of Leicester. After that, he learned about film and television at the Royal College of Art. He was also a close friend of Pink Floyd's guitarist, David Gilmour.
A Creative Career Begins
In 1968, Storm Thorgerson started a graphic art group called Hipgnosis with his friend Aubrey Powell. Together, they designed many famous album covers. Their work was truly unique and eye-catching.
After Hipgnosis, Storm and Aubrey also made music videos through their company, Greenback Films. In the 1990s, Storm started his own design studio called StormStudios. He worked with a team of talented photographers, designers, and artists.
The Art of Album Covers
Storm Thorgerson's most famous designs are for Pink Floyd. His artwork for The Dark Side of the Moon is known as one of the greatest album covers ever! This iconic design was created by Storm and Hipgnosis, with the drawing done by George Hardie.
Many of Storm's designs have a surreal look. This means they often show things that are dream-like or unexpected. He liked to put everyday objects in strange places, making them look awkward but also beautiful. Storm once said he liked to "mess with reality" to make people wonder if what they were seeing was real or not.
Over the years, Storm and his team published several books about their amazing artwork. The last book he worked on, The Gathering Storm, was finished just before he passed away. It shares many of his album covers and stories from his long career.
In 2013, a music magazine called Prog Magazine honored Storm by renaming their Grand Design Award after him. It's now called the Storm Thorgerson Grand Design Award. This award celebrates the best album artwork of the year.
Health and Legacy
In 2003, Storm Thorgerson had a stroke, which affected his body. Later, he was diagnosed with cancer. He passed away in London on April 18, 2013, at the age of 69.
After his death, David Gilmour from Pink Floyd said that Storm was a "constant force" in his life and a "great friend." Nick Mason, Pink Floyd's drummer, called him a "tireless worker." Storm Thorgerson is buried in Highgate Cemetery in London.
His creative work continues to inspire artists and music fans around the world.
