Strathy is a beautiful valley, known as a strath in Scottish Gaelic. Its name, "An t-Srathaidh," means "small strath." This peaceful area is found in the Highlands of Scotland. It forms the northern part of a larger region called Ardross.
The Strathy valley stretches for about 1.5 miles from south-southwest to north-northeast. Its flat bottom lands are mostly fields. These fields are used for grazing animals like sheep and cattle. Tall commercial pine forests surround the entire valley. For a long time, Strathy was home to tenant crofters. These were farmers who rented small plots of land. While the number of people living here slowly went down for many years, recently more new homes have been built and old ones fixed up. Strathy is located just east of another main valley, Strathrusdale.
Strathy's Ancient Past
The very first people we know lived in Strathy were the Picts. They were an ancient group who lived in Scotland. The Picts made their homes here until the 10th century. During that time, Strathy was part of a larger kingdom. This kingdom was known as the Kingdom of Fortriu. After the Picts, more people from Norway and other northern lands started to settle in the area.
