Streets Run: A Look Back in History
Long ago, Streets Run was known as Licking Creek. You can see it on an old map from 1751. This map was made by Joshua Fry and Peter Jefferson, and it was very special. It was one of the first maps to correctly show the Allegheny Mountains.
The map also showed a long path called "The Great Road from the Yadkin River thro Virgionia to Philadelphia". This path was 455 miles long! Today, we know it as the Great Philadelphia Wagon Road. It was a very important route for people traveling in colonial times.
Mining for Coal Along Streets Run
For many years, people dug for coal near Streets Run. Coal is a type of rock that can be burned for energy. In 1828, a man named James Hardin Hays started one of the first coal mines here.
Other companies, like I.D. Risher and Daniel W Risher, also had coal mines in the area. The Harrison Gas Coal Company was another important mining business. These mines helped power homes and industries.
Railroads and Transportation
To move the coal from the mines, railroads were built along Streets Run. The H.B. Hays and Brothers Coal Railroad was one of these lines. It helped carry coal from J.H. Hays's mine to a place called Six Mile Ferry on the Monongahela River.
Later, other railroads like the Pittsburgh Southern Railroad and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad also had tracks in the valley. These trains helped transport goods and people. The Whitehall Tunnel is a special tunnel that connects this valley to another area called the Peters Creek watershed.
