Stroller White Mountain, also known as Mount Stroller White, is a mountain in Alaska, USA. It stands about 5,118 feet (1,560 meters) tall. This peak is located in the Boundary Ranges, which are part of the larger Coast Mountains.
The mountain is found near the bottom of the famous Mendenhall Glacier. It is also inside the huge Tongass National Forest. Stroller White Mountain is about 13 miles (21 km) northwest of Juneau, Alaska. Even though it's not the highest mountain, it looks very impressive because it rises steeply from sea level in just a few miles. People often see and photograph Stroller White Mountain with McGinnis Mountain, another peak nearby. They both stand tall behind Mendenhall Lake, which is a popular spot for visitors.
Who Was E. J. "Stroller" White?
The mountain was named in 1931 to honor Elmer John "Stroller" White (1859-1930). He was a very famous newspaper editor and publisher in the Territory of Alaska.
Stroller White was living in Washington state when news spread about the gold discoveries in the Klondike Gold Rush in 1898. He decided to go north to the goldfields. There, he worked for the Skagway News newspaper. He wrote stories about a famous gang led by Soapy Smith, including a well-known gunfight called the Shootout on Juneau Wharf.
The excitement of the gold rush then took him to Dawson, Yukon. In Dawson, he wrote a newspaper column called "The Stroller by E.J. White". This column was so popular that it earned him the nickname "Stroller." From 1904 to 1916, Stroller White was the editor of the Whitehorse Star newspaper.
In 1917, he moved to the Juneau area and started his own newspaper, Strollers Weekly. He later became the Chief of the Territorial Bureau of Publicity. He also served as the Speaker of the Territorial House of Representatives, which is like being the leader of the local government's law-making group.
Mountain Weather and Climate
Stroller White Mountain has a subarctic climate. This means it has very cold, snowy winters and mild summers. Weather systems from the Gulf of Alaska hit the Coast Mountains. This causes a lot of rain and snow to fall on the mountain.
Temperatures can drop below −4 °F (−20 °C). With the wind, it can feel even colder, sometimes below −22 °F (−30 °C). This cold climate helps keep the Mendenhall Glacier and the Juneau Icefield frozen. The best time to visit or climb the mountain is usually from May through July, when the weather is most pleasant.
