Sugar City is a city located in Madison County, Idaho, United States. In 2020, about 1,715 people lived there. This was an increase from 1,514 people in 2010. Sugar City is part of the larger Rexburg area.

History of Sugar City
Sugar City started as a "company town." This means it was built mainly to support a big sugar factory. The factory, which processed sugar beets, was built between 1903 and 1904.
Early Days and Nicknames
At first, workers and their families lived in tents. This gave the town the nickname "Rag Town." By 1904, Sugar City had grown to include many homes, stores, a hotel, and even a school.
Japanese Community in Sugar City
In its early years, the sugar factory needed more workers. This led to a community of Japanese migrants and their families settling in the area.
Teton Dam Collapse Impact
On June 5, 1976, the town was flooded. This happened when the Teton Dam collapsed.

Sugar City is located in the northern part of Madison County.
Location and Roads
U.S. Route 20 runs along the western side of the city. This road goes southwest about 5 miles to Rexburg. It also goes northeast about 7 miles to St. Anthony. Idaho State Highway 33 goes through the middle of Sugar City. It leads southwest about 4.5 miles to Rexburg. It also goes east the same distance to Teton.
