A Look Back: Suisun City's History
Suisun City was started in the 1850s. Its location was great for trade and travel during the California Gold Rush.
Railroad Connections
In the late 1860s, Suisun City got connected to the First transcontinental railroad. This helped the region connect with the rest of the United States. Later, the main railroad route from San Francisco to other parts of the country went right through Suisun City.
The Great Fire of 1888
In 1888, a big fire destroyed much of downtown Suisun. Many important buildings were lost. People thought about leaving the city. But instead, they decided to rebuild. They also raised money to build a water system. This system would help them fight future fires better.
Growth and Changes in the 1900s
In the 1960s and 1970s, Suisun City grew very fast. More people moved there as the San Francisco Bay Area expanded. Around the same time, Interstate 80 was built a couple of miles outside the city. This highway made it easier for goods to travel by road instead of by train or boat.
