Sulli's Early Life and Dreams
Sulli was born on March 29, 1994, in Busan, South Korea. From a young age, she dreamed of becoming an actress. When she was in fourth grade, around 10 years old, she moved to Seoul by herself.
She attended the MTM Academy, a special school where she learned singing, dancing, and acting. Her birth name, Choi Jin-ri, means "the truth" in Korean. A reporter suggested she change it to Sulli, which she later said meant "pear blossoms in the snow."
Sulli's Career Journey
Starting as a Child Actress
Sulli began her acting career at age 11 in 2005. She played a young Princess Seonhwa of Silla in the TV drama Ballad of Seodong. She then took on small roles in other TV shows and movies. These included Vacation (2006) and BABO (2008).
When Sulli was in fourth grade, she auditioned for SM Entertainment. She sang a song called Chingu ("Friend"). She was accepted as a trainee and moved into a dormitory. She lived there with Taeyeon and Tiffany, who later became members of Girls' Generation.
Becoming a K-Pop Star with f(x)
On September 5, 2009, Sulli debuted as a member of the K-pop group f(x). Their first song was "La Cha Ta." The group became very popular.
In August 2012, Sulli starred in the TV drama To the Beautiful You. It was based on a famous Japanese comic book series. Sulli played Gu Jae-hee, a girl who pretends to be a boy to attend a special school. To prepare for the role, she cut her long hair very short. Her performance earned her the New Star Award at the SBS Drama Awards.
In 2014, while promoting f(x)'s album Red Light, Sulli took a break. She was feeling tired from online rumors and mean comments. She did not promote the movie The Pirates, where she had a supporting role. However, she later promoted the movie Fashion King that same year. In August 2015, Sulli officially left f(x).

Between 2015 and 2017, Sulli worked as a model for different campaigns. She became a model for Estée Lauder. In 2017, she starred in the movie Real.
Solo Music and Final Projects
Sulli returned to music in 2018. She was featured on Dean's song "Dayfly." On June 29, 2019, Sulli released her first solo album called "Goblin." She helped write and produce all the songs on it.
In 2019, Sulli joined a TV show called The Night of Hate Comments. On the show, celebrities talked about hateful comments and cyberbullying they received online. Sulli often responded to mean comments with a cheerful attitude. She said she wanted people to accept differences and understand that "someone like that exists!"
Sulli was also filming a Netflix series called Persona in 2019. Production was stopped after her death.
Sulli's Public Image
After leaving f(x), Sulli gained attention for being very open and unique. Some people saw her as "eccentric" or "forward-thinking." Others, especially more traditional media, thought she was "inappropriate."
Many media outlets believed that Sulli's public image was different from other K-pop idols. She openly challenged what was expected of women in Korean culture. The Associated Press said Sulli was known for her "feminist voice and outspokenness." This was rare for female entertainers in South Korea.
Sulli often spoke out against cyberbullying. She was a target of online abuse because of her public image. She hoped people could accept each other's differences. She felt that talented people were wasting their energy by criticizing others online.
Sulli was also an artist. One of her drawings inspired IU's song "Red Queen." IU's song "Peach" was also inspired by Sulli.
Sulli's Personal Life and Challenges
Sulli faced personal challenges during her life. She shared that she struggled with panic disorder and social phobia from a young age. Before her death, Sulli was also dealing with severe depression.
Sulli's Death and Its Impact
On October 14, 2019, Sulli was found dead in her home in Seongnam, South Korea. Her brother, who was also her manager, found her.
Her funeral was private, attended by family and close friends. However, her agency, SM Entertainment, opened a special place for fans to pay their respects. Many celebrities and companies canceled their activities to mourn Sulli.
Sulli's death led to discussions about depression and cyberbullying in South Korea. It was revealed that Sulli had asked her agency to take strong action against malicious comments. After her death, many people signed petitions asking for tougher punishments for cyberbullying. There were also discussions about making people use their real names when posting comments online.
