Plot: Sammy's Big Journey
Sammy's Early Life and Friends
The story begins in 1959. A little green sea turtle named Sammy hatches on a quiet beach. Right away, he faces danger when a seagull tries to catch him. Luckily, he escapes with another baby turtle, Shelly. But then, Sammy falls onto an old raft and floats away into the big Tasman Sea, losing Shelly.
Later, Sammy meets another baby turtle, a leatherback named Ray. They become the best of friends and grow up together, exploring the ocean.
Facing Dangers in the Ocean
One day, Ray introduces Sammy to a new friend, Slim the day octopus. But their fun is cut short when a terrible oil spill happens from a shipwreck. Sammy and Ray have to find shelter from the oil. After the raft they were on breaks apart, they get caught in fishing nets and are separated. Hours later, Sammy is thrown back into the sea, but a friendly dolphin saves him.
New Encounters and Reunions
Sammy washes ashore and finds himself in a special area. Humans, called hippies, are taking care of him. He also meets a friendly cat named Fluffy. Later, a bigger turtle named Vera joins Sammy in the enclosure. However, Vera is soon released back into the sea. Not long after, the hippies leave, and Sammy returns to the ocean. He is happily reunited with Vera! While looking for food, Sammy and Vera rescue another female turtle. To Sammy's surprise, it's Shelly, his friend from when he was a hatchling!
The Search for the Secret Passage
Sammy and Shelly travel the oceans together. They keep asking other sea creatures about a "secret passage" Sammy had heard about. Finally, they decide to brave the Panama Canal. This is a tricky journey, and they get separated again while trying to pass through a lock. Sammy follows Shelly's trail all the way to the cold Antarctic. There, scientists pick him up and take him to California, where he meets his old cat friend, Fluffy, again!
Helping Friends and Finding Love
Soon, Sammy is released back into the ocean. Two other leatherback turtles ask him for help. They need him to rescue a turtle trapped in a container. It turns out the trapped turtle is his old friend, Ray! With help from Ray's girlfriend, Rita, Sammy explores a sunken ship. He finds Shelly there, but she's with another turtle named Robbie. Rita tells Sammy that Robbie isn't a good match for Shelly. To win Shelly's heart back, Ray helps Sammy plan a fake rescue with a shark named Albert.
Finally, Sammy and Shelly are reunited for good. They, along with Ray and Rita, return to the beach where Sammy was born. There, they have their own hatchlings. The movie ends with Sammy, now a grandfather, helping his tiny grandson out of his nest. He encourages his grandson to start his own amazing journey.
