Dominic Edward Cooper (born on June 2, 1978) is an English actor. He is well-known for playing characters from comic books. These include Jesse Custer in the TV show Preacher (from 2016 to 2019). He also played a younger Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. You might have seen him as Howard Stark in Captain America: The First Avenger (2011) and the TV series Agent Carter (2015–2016).
Dominic Cooper also played the role of Sky in the popular movie Mamma Mia! (2008). He returned for the sequel, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again (2018).
Early in his acting career, Cooper had important roles in plays by the Royal National Theatre and Royal Shakespeare Company. He was praised for being the first to play Dakin in the 2004 play The History Boys. He later performed this role again in London's West End and on Broadway. The play was also made into a movie, The History Boys. Since then, he has acted in many British and American films. These include the historical dramas An Education (2009) and My Week with Marilyn (2011). He also appeared in action movies like Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (2012) and Need for Speed (2014). He was also in the fantasy film Warcraft (2016).

Early Life and School
Dominic Cooper was born and grew up in Greenwich, London. His mother, Julie, was a nursery school teacher. His father, Brian, was an auctioneer. Dominic has two brothers, Simon and Nathan. Nathan is a musician in the band The Modern. He also has a half-brother, James, and a half-sister, Emma. His great-grandfather, E. T. Heron, loved films and published a magazine called The Kinematograph Weekly.
Dominic went to John Ball Primary School in Blackheath, London. Then he attended Thomas Tallis School in Kidbrooke. After that, he studied acting at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA). He finished his training there in 2000.
Acting Career
Dominic Cooper started his career in television and film. His first stage play was Mother Clap's Molly House at the National Theatre in 2001. He was part of Alan Bennett's play The History Boys from the very beginning, playing the character Dakin. He toured with this play to Broadway, Sydney, Wellington, and Hong Kong. He also appeared in the radio and film versions of the play.
He had other important roles, such as Will Parry in the Royal National Theatre's play based on the His Dark Materials books. He also appeared in the TV series Down To Earth and Sense & Sensibility.
In 2008, he played Sky in the movie Mamma Mia! and sang several songs. That same year, he acted alongside Keira Knightley in The Duchess, playing Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey. In 2009, he starred in the films An Education and Freefall. He also played Hippolytus in the play Phèdre at the National Theatre with Helen Mirren.
In 2010, he played a rock drummer named Ben in the film Tamara Drewe. In 2011, he took on two main roles, Latif Yahia and Uday Hussein, in the movie The Devil's Double. He also played Milton H. Greene in My Week with Marilyn. The year 2011 was also when Cooper first appeared as Howard Stark in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was in the film Captain America: The First Avenger. He played Howard Stark again in the short film Agent Carter and in the TV series Agent Carter in 2015 and 2016.
In 2012, he played the vampire Henry Sturges in Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter.

In 2014, he played the main bad guy in two films: Dino Brewster in Need for Speed and Mehmed in Dracula Untold. Cooper also played James Bond author Ian Fleming in the TV mini-series Fleming: The Man Who Would Be Bond in 2014. The next year, he was in two films, Miss You Already and The Lady in the Van.
Cooper played Jesse Custer, the main character in AMC's TV show Preacher, which started in May 2016. He also starred in the Warcraft movie, released in June 2016. In late 2016, he starred in a play called The Libertine in London's West End. He played John Wilmot, Earl of Rochester.
In 2018, Cooper returned as Sky in the sequel movie Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again.
Personal Life
Dominic Cooper used to share a flat with James Corden. They were co-stars in The History Boys and Starter for 10. Cooper introduced Corden to his wife, Julia Carey. Cooper is also the godfather to Corden's first child, Max.
Cooper was in a relationship with his Mamma Mia! co-star Amanda Seyfried from 2008 to 2009. From 2010 to 2016, he was with Irish actress Ruth Negga. They met in 2009 while working on the play Phèdre. They also acted together in other projects, including the short film Hello Carter (2011), the movie Warcraft (2016), and the TV show Preacher (2016–2019). They lived together in London. Since 2018, Cooper has been in a relationship with actress Gemma Chan.
Public Involvement
In 2014, Dominic Cooper was one of 200 public figures who signed a letter to The Guardian newspaper. The letter shared their hope that Scotland would remain part of the United Kingdom in a vote that year. In 2023, he signed a public letter from a group called Artists4Ceasefire. This letter asked for peace during a conflict.
